I believe dorm mates are typically assigned in college and there's a fairly convoluted process to get swapped out.
My guess is that the school probably assigned the people to that living situation. Mr. Knopp didn’t want to be labeled a racist for wanting to move out of that situation, so he toughed it out just to be “tolerant” of his “diverse” living quarters.
In fact, the school probably asked students “Do you want to live in an enlightened, woke, diverse pod?” and he jumped at the chance to show his woke bona fides by answering “yes.”
