How exactly were they able to do this without a submarine or proper equipment?. It was reported just a couple weeks ago they had no ability to do such a thing.
If Iran can build sophisticated flying drones they are shipping to Russia, then they can build sophisticated underwater drones to take out undersea cables.
All cables surface at either end to connect to the rest of the infrastructure. There’s a secure landing zone and it was probably overrun and destroyed. I’d like to know the details too though.
Dragging a weighted anchor from the back of a ship could snag and sever the cable. It’s been done like that before.
one could just drag a piece of conctete at the end of a cable across the sea floor with a tug boat and get the job done.
Whoever wrote that report...
Anyway, the cables sometimes run in waters not all that deep, even if well offshore. Take a look at the maps of the cables’ routes posted online or on YouTube, and compare to topographical maps of the sea floor in the area. So, yes, dragging an anchor, etc., can work to break or damage a cable. You’d think SOME extra strength would be built into a cable, but it might not be a lot, as that would add weight and cost, difficulty of laying, etc.
All you need is something heavy on a long enough cable to drag along the bottom. These cables get broken all the time by fishing trawlers and poorly managed anchors.
