Former Major League Baseball slugger Steve Garvey has moved ahead of U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff in California’s U.S. Senate primary – a significant feat despite the November runoff having already been determined.
As of Wednesday morning, Garvey led Schiff by an incredibly slim margin of just 4,801 votes with more than 5 million votes tallied, about 85% of expected returns.
Schiff, one of the leading Democrats in the U.S. House, will face Garvey, a Republican, in November to determine who succeeds the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. California puts all candidates, regardless of party, on the same primary ballot, and the two who get the most votes advance to the general election.
Whether Garvey retains the lead remains to be seen. However, the former Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres star is attempting to seize the moment.
A Republican hasn’t won a statewide race for any office in California since 2006.

Do you wonder why Garvey beat Schiff in the race to finish Feinstein’s term, yet lost to Schiff in the race for a new term. A California voter was interviewed about problems in the voting and said the machines would let them vote Garvey for the unexpired term, but they could not vote Garvey for the new term.
The primary vote was split about 60/40, with the dem candidates splitting the 60% among multiple candidates. It will likely be 60/40 again in November, with the scumbag schiff winning easily. Our best hope is for dems to be so disillusioned with Biden that they don’t vote at all, while Trump turns out a huge vote with long coat tails. I won’t be holding my breath...
It would be hilarious if Garvey actually won.
Yeah I live here, Schiff’s only claim to fame is that he hates Trump, that is enough to get him 60 percent of the vote here..yet NO ONE dares to ask him about his best bud Ed Buck, that is off limits here..not one reporter dares to ask him about it
If no one shows up to vote in California, the Democrat still wins 52-48.
I’ve noticed that shiffty’s eyes have been bugging out extra far these dayz.
“It’s a dang shame Tommy LaSorda isn’t still alive to campaign with Garvey.”
Even Vin Scully(RIP) might pitch in some Farmer John Bacon.
Oh, coolio! Trump’s on his way to beating Ronald Reagan’s 1980 (?) Electoral College win. He should, since Reagan is the one who told Trump he should run for president. The Trump Trend continues.
Its wacky California so Garvey will need a miracle.
Doesn’t matter. The ballot will be Schiff v Garvey.
This just shows how bad CA voting system is in not being able to count votes.
Crap you must not be that old.........
Boy...that would be sweet...a real twofer...picking up the sweet and getting rid of Schiff.
I know nothing about Steve Garvey, other than watching as a kid in LA. He was the ice-man, infallible first base Dodger with perfect hair and a hot wife.
But he’s not schifft, which is all I needed to vote for him last Tues.
One might recall the story of how the ruler of Carthage invited the Vandals, a barbarian tribe, into his country in order to gain the edge over his rivals in a civil war. The Vandals helped him defeat his enemies but then turned on him and took over.
“Even Vin Scully(RIP) might pitch in some Farmer John Bacon.”
The only baseball related person to endorse Garvey is Ross Porter, the former Dodgers announcer.
Scully and Lasorda definitely would have campaigned for Garvey if they were alive today.
I’m talking about today...not 20/30/40 years ago.
Scull6 has an awsome anti- socialist rant on You Tube.
Its California - Garvey will lose in November by 20 points.
They’re just figuring out how many loose votes they need.
The odds of Schiff losing in the general election are near zero.
Garvey seems to have won the “fill the term” contest and should be seated as a Senator until January. He’s a “moderate” (liberal imo) Republican but light years better than Schiff.
He and Schiff are top two and will be on the November ballot for the six year term that starts 2025. Here Schiff has a large edge but still, good for a few months anyway. Katie Porter is politically homeless now as is Barbara Lee, may their careers be over.
