House passes $1.2 trillion spending package hours before shutdown deadline, sending it to Senate

Washington — The House passed a massive spending package on Friday to fully fund the government through September, sending it to the Senate ahead of a midnight deadline to avert a partial shutdown.

The House approved the $1.2 trillion package, which was unveiled early Thursday, in a vote of 286 to 134. The package wraps six spending bills into one to fund about three-quarters of the government until the end of the fiscal year. Another package funding the rest of the government cleared Congress two weeks ago.

A majority of Republicans voted against the measure, with House conservatives objecting to the funding levels in the agreement that House Speaker Mike Johnson reached with Democratic leadership in the Senate. The bill includes money for the departments of State, Homeland Security, Defense, Labor and Health and Human Services, as well as funds for foreign operations, financial services and the legislative branch.

Passage in the House moves Congress one step closer to ending a fight over spending that has persisted six months into the fiscal year, one that has forced lawmakers to repeatedly rely on short-term funding extensions to keep the government operating since October.

Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, waived a self-imposed 72-hour rule that gives lawmakers time to read legislation before a vote in order to get it across the finish line and send it to the Senate, giving the upper chamber just hours before the clock strikes midnight.

Senate rules that allow a single lawmaker to object to expediting a bill's passage could push a vote into Saturday. Republicans are also likely to demand votes on amendments in exchange for speeding up the process, as they did with the last funding bill. Sen. Susan Collins of Maine predicted the upper chamber could hold amendment votes as soon as Friday afternoon.

It was instructive that Johnson could garner so much support in his vote to secure the Speakership, and Jim Jordan, and much more conservative option, couldn't.

Amidst rumblings of Jim Jordan's turn is next, he too is compromised.

I saw him on a raining cats-n-dogs day, a rally of conservative grass roots, I was drenched, and then not 10 days later, voted for another trillion dollar resolution.

For anybody on the fence: ITS. ALL. OF. THEM.

How can anyone expect congress to get anything done that The People want if they keep adding these damned add-ons, supplements and earmarks?
I am so sick of bills losing their intent after everyone shovels their sh!t on to it.
If Critter A has to add gimees so Critter B will vote for it then Critter B is a lazy scumbag.

Hey! Critter B: If you want something 'for your constituents' write a damn bill to ask for it and stop bloating eveyone else's 20 page bill into 1000 page monstrosities with hidden bribes and language the kills the original intent of the bill itself.

GAH!

“There ain’t enough SUGAR to compensate for all the SH!T the DEMS ram down our throats!!!

TRAITORS!!!”

I understand. Realize that the people on the other side are just as angry, just as adamant and probably crazy too. Some of them believe, for example, that they are women despite having all the wrong equipment. But they have a vote you, as a congressman, must get in order to serve your constituents. You have no other choice.

So, here are the options. You kill everyone on the other side, because nothing less will work. Or you hammer out an agreement nobody likes. And, in so doing, the people like you and me, who voted for this or that guy, will hate their own politician and call him a traitor.

Realizing he has to work in the real world, I’ll cut him some slack.

That government is so entrenched in everything in our daily lives is the problem. Rip the bandaid off. Throwing good money after bad is not the answer because grandma’s check won’t come. Strawman bullshit. Grandma will get her check.

I predict that the next Fed interest rate change will be up, not down. Government spending is now too large a share of the economy, and expecting inflation to come under control merely by pummeling the private sector while the government continues on its drunken-sailor-spending binge is unrealistic.

Okay. I agree a hundred percent. Let’s rip the Band-Aid off. So, what we’ll do is propose The Band-Aid Rip-off bill. Now, we need the votes to pass it. Uhm...part of the stuff to be ripped off is the bill passed by the guy who thinks he’s a woman and wants two hundred million dollars so “trans” women can nurse babies in public. Uhm...how, exactly do we get his (cough) her vote?

Several times in my career I had a boss who wanted this or that impossible task done. It has to be done right now! But there was no possible way to do the job. Either it defied physics, or we had no people, or no funding...but none of that meant anything to the guy who wanted the job done NOW! I think that’s where we are. Much as I’d like to rip the band aide off, there’s no practical way to do it. If I’m wrong, for God’s sake, call your congressman.

Very few people in Congress have the courage to do what’s right. Johnson has proven he does not. Why was McCarthy removed if his replacement is no better?

It passed 286-134. I’d call that a majority.

Ha! The band-aid will be ripped off one way or the other when we run out of money and the commies complete the looting of our country. Then gramma will really be SOL.

The least that weakling could’ve done is put some money in for our border instead of Ukraine’s sinkhole.

Poor guy had to compromise every single thing away for his pals.

The deal in the House for both McCarthy and Johnson was majority republican support before anything brought to floor.
