FTC report suggests high grocery bills likely due to ‘greedflation’ caused by big corporations

A new report from the Federal Trade Commission suggests grocery giants used inflation and supply chain disruptions during the pandemic to drive their profits and keep raising prices.

Now, the agency is urging Congress to take a closer look into grocery profits.

The data shows food prices in the United States spiked 11% between 2021 and 2022, the largest annual increase in over 40 years.

News4JAX asked local consumers about their current spending Friday.

“Everything. Everything. Everything that I can think of that I need, you know, it’s expensive,” a consumer said.

The prices at the grocery store are high.

“I find fruits and vegetables and the things we need the most are the most expensive,” a consumer said.

The report from the FTC revealed prices might even be higher than they should be with grocery store chains like Walmart exploiting COVID-19 product shortages to raise their prices.

“It’s all about big business. The little people don’t count,” a resident said.

The report reads: “Some firms seem to have used rising costs as an opportunity to further hike prices to increase their profits, and profits remain elevated even as supply chain pressures have eased.”

Never mind that government collects far more taxes per gallon than Big Oil makes in profit.

Exactly.

Honestly, when I’m king, people who are so unserious about governing that they coin terms like”minibus” and “greedflation” are going to be summarily shot the day after my coronation

There are a lot of stupid people out there ... they believed the FDA, CDC, Labor Department, FBI, etc. so it is highly possible they will believe the FTC fools.

This is a load of cr@p.

Here is the financial statement of Kroger, in the the largest publicly-traded grocery chains.

https://ir.kroger.com/files/doc_financials/2023/q4/FINAL-KR-Q4-FY23-Earnings-Presentation-with-tables.pdf

Look at page 23. Kroger’s operating margin (the ratio of operating income to total sales, ie the profit left after covering the expenses of operations) was down in 2023 (2.1%) vs 2022.= (2.8%).

That means the inflationary impact on revenue was more than exceeded by the inflationary impact of operating expenses.

Whenever the government publishes a report, a flower dies.

Grocery stores have to pay for their incoming freight which is brought in by diesel trucks. Diesel is 50% higher than it was 3 years ago. That cost has to be passed along.

FJB squared.

Grocery Stores work on about a 2% profit margin and it’s highly competitive.

I think a lot of it is price gouging greed. Just like every other inflation cycle. If the price of one item in the production chain goes up 10%, as an example, they raise prices 20% and pocket the difference. It surely will not be the first or last time.

Just no way soda needed to go up as much as it has for example. NO way. It is sugar and water for crying out loud. Another one is PVC. That was something you hardly gave notice to in price. Now it is a major purchase. Natural gas is the primary component and it has gone way down to historically low levels. Did PVC pipe and fittings follow? HELL NO.

That first sentence tells you the author is either dumber than a bag of rocks or a liar. I'm going with liar.

First of all food prices didn't rise much until the fall of '22 so Democrat created supply chain disruptions during the plandemic aren't the issue or price rises would have started two years earlier in late 2020.

Secondly, duh, inflation caused food prices to rise. Are the "grocery giants" somehow immune to inflation and just being greedy to raise them?

Someone please take the author down to the dumpsters and dispose of him/her/zer/ze/zit.

Yeah, but it worked so well in Venezuela, Argentina, Zimbabwe, and South Africa!

When there are no rich people, no greedy corporations, no
food, no energy supplies, no personal property, who and what
are they going to destroy next?

You can really see why tens of millions of people die each
time Communism is reborn.

When the US craters, 100s of millkions will die.
