Enormous infernos ripped through the night sky in the occupied port city of Sevastopol.
And as dawn broke this morning, Ukrainian forces announced they had hit two large Russian warships- Yamal and Azov.
Both damaged vessels are Ropucha-class landing ships, 370ft long, 4,000 ton behemoths designed for D-Day-style amphibious assaults.
Ukraine has attacked this type of ship before - sinking sister ships Tsezar Kunikov and Novocherkassk.
Kyiv is reported to have used British Storm Shadow missiles in the strike - 600mph long-range weapons which have proved effective against the Russians.
Putin's crony in Crimea, Mikhail Razvozhaev, was forced to admit the Russian military fought off Ukrainian rockets in a "massive attack" on Saturday.
Local reports said the barrage had also targeted the Belbek military airfield - home to Putin's prized fighter jet fleet.
Ukraine's daring hit comes as the latest embarrassment to embattled Putin's war effort - possibly striking land, air and sea via Putin's Black Sea Fleet comms centre.
The centre of the naval port was left "on fire", according to witnesses.
A Crimea Telegram channel said: "The missiles arrived at the main special communications center of the Russian Black Sea Fleet".
Ukrainian missiles have also reportedly hit several buildings in the occupied region...
Ukraine has had great success chipping away at Vlad's prized Black Sea Fleet, and in September they used the missiles along with explosive-packed drone boats to damage two key Russian ships...

Both “Azov” and “Yamal” were destroyed.

The BSF now has about 30% of their ships destroyed, which dramatically reduces its effectiveness, plus many more hits still to come.

It may be, this whole war has been about putins dreams of grandeur. A greater Russia to replace the loss of power he recognizes after the fall of the Soviet Union.
If Russia lays down its weapons and returns to its borders there can be peace, if Ukraine does they will cease to exist

Escalation invites more escalation. Russian retaliation will increase in intensity and lethality. More senseless destruction in a ten year war that Ukraine cannot win.
I suspect redundant open frame warships will be the future, at least in the Black Sea.
They will highly resistant to Storm Shadow type attacks but still have long range guns.
Another possibility is small PT-109 type boats with missiles.
