Internet Crimes Cost Central Coast Residents Over $5 Million in 2023, FBI Finds

The Federal Bureau of Investigation San Francisco has filed its Internet Crime Report for 2023. They found that these types of crimes cost Californians over $2 billion in 2023.

Here on the Central Coast, investment scams and phishing scams cost residents over $5 million.

Investment Scams:

Monterey County- 33 victims suffered$2,534,214 in reported losses.

Santa Cruz County- 37 victims suffered $2,484,283 in reported losses.

San Benito County- Five victims suffered $251,801 in reported losses.

Phishing Scams:

Monterey County- Six victims suffered $13,300 in reported losses

Santa Cruz County- 10 victims suffered $500 in reported losses

San Benito County- 0 victims suffered $0 in reported losses

"In 2023, the IC3 received a record number of complaints from the American public: 880,418 complaints with potential losses exceeding $12.5 billion, which is nearly a 10% increase in complaints and a 22% increase in losses compared to 2022," said the FBI in its filed Internet Crime Report.

The highest reported losses nationwide in 2023 came from investment scams. "An investment scam is a deceptive practice that induces investors to make purchases based on false information. These scams usually offer those targeted significant returns with minimal risk," said the FBI.

A pittance compared to the illegal immigrant price tag. Heck, it would cost that much to scrape feces off the sidewalks of San Francisco.
