Group of Republicans blocks FISA bill with spy powers deadline looming

A group of House Republicans on Wednesday tanked a procedural vote to begin debate on a bill to reauthorize the nation’s warrantless surveillance powers, leaving the chamber scrambling on how to address the important spy tool before it expires next week.

Nineteen Republicans joined Democrats in voting against a rule for legislation to renew Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), blocking the measure from advancing 193-228.

The move comes after former President Trump on Wednesday urged Republicans to “KILL FISA” — throwing a wrench in an already contentious debate.

The tanked procedural vote also stymies a plan from House leadership to take up an amendment many in the GOP’s right wing say is a top priority — adding a warrant requirement to the bill.

Led by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and other MAGA-aligned conservatives, the vote marks yet another instance of members of the GOP tanking what is typically a routine party-line vote in protest of legislation.

Section 702 allows the government to spy on foreigners located abroad, but that surveillance also sweeps in their communications with any Americans with whom they are in contact.

The issue of whether to require a warrant to access the information on Americans caught up in the surveillance has created strange bedfellows, with some members on both sides of the aisle uniting around an amendment they see as a safeguard for Americans, and others saying it would gut the program entirely.

Earlier today there was reported a compromise in which Congress but not the American public would be exempt from warrantless spying.

It appears enough members in both parties were able to block reauthorization even without the "compromise".

I’m sure they’re already spying on Trump’s campaign again

All they’re doing is holding out for some more entitlements. As they get down to the wire the sordid blackmail pictures will be disseminated in conspicuous places and “decisions” will be made, no? A story as old as time?

Trump is right, as usual.

FISA powers are incredibly invasive and warrantless.

Truth is, you can listen in on folks anyway, using the normal route by getting a judge to ok it, T3: https://bja.ojp.gov/program/it/privacy-civil-liberties/authorities/statutes/1284. Not a federal FISA court kangaroo judge that’s a rubber stamp and has a cozy relationship with those asking for it, but a real judge and court.

FISA has been ABUSED.

Repeatedly, and the IC has demonstrated that they cannot be trusted with this power.

It needs to go.

Kill the bill. They will still spy, but can be put out of circulation if caught.

“They are keeping track of everyone who posts here and what they say.”

I’m sure “they” can easily resolve beyond anonymous FReeper handles.

Google quickly sweeps up posts here.

How you paid infiltrators are allowed to run amok here is past my understanding. You are here to disrupt conservative values and this forum. It could not be more obvious.

“Not a federal FISA court kangaroo judge that’s a rubber stamp and has a cozy relationship with those asking for it”

Traitor Roberts is totally in charge of the FISA operation.

Until you get the story from someone other than places like the lying communist hill then there is no telling what the actual reasoning is here.

Let this piece of legislative tripe just die.

Let’s call the first step in de-weaponizing FedGov.

It appears enough members in both parties were able to block reauthorization.

Indeed it takes time for proper wording to write the One World Constitution.

I have recently heard other congress people talk about it too. The truth is on Alternative media. The MSM is propaganda and lies.
