Well,wouldn't ya know it...NASA then announced the discovery of at least one (and,IIRC,it was *more* than one) *active* volcano under that ice shelf.
Sea ice extent in the Arctic is mostly determined by prevailing winds and ocean currents. It probably is declining slightly over the years as natural increments in temperature and increased sunlight due to pollution control occur. But the natural ebb and flow is too small to get upset about; if it might even be good to have an open arctic for shipping purposes.
