Fact Check: NYT Claims Reagan Withheld Arms from Israel, Like Biden
Breitbart ^ | 05/10/2024 | JOEL B. POLLAK

Posted on 05/10/2024 12:39:25 PM PDT by ChicagoConservative27

CLAIM: President Ronald Reagan, like President Joe Biden, withheld arms from Israel to influence its military policy.

VERDICT: MISLEADING. Reagan acted within the law, and in very different circumstances, in withholding arms. The New York Times‘ Peter Baker — winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his newspaper’s bogus reporting on “Russia collusion” — wrote Friday that President Reagan, too, withheld weapons from Israel over concerns about their use.

Baker’s aim in the article appears to be to rescue Biden from some of the criticism he has faced since he confirmed earlier this week that the administration was withholding bombs and artillery from Israel over its Rafah operation.

Baker notes that the Reagan administration delayed the sale of jet fighters and the shipment of cluster munitions to Israel on several occasions.

Maybe Israel should be using cluster munitions on Gaza.

Was Israel at war at the time?

Pollack could also have mentioned that the outgoing Carter Administration did not properly inform the incoming Administration about Israel’s intention to stop Iraq acquiring nuclear weapons. That caused an unnecessary spat between the US and Israel when the IAF destroyed the Osirak nuclear reactor. Luckily it was short-lived once Israel informed Reagan about the facts.

comparing Ronald Reagan to Biden is rather like comparing George Washington to Jimmy Carter.

In principle Israel has been at war since 1948. However, she was not under attack when the Reagan administration delayed sending weapons.

Hamas launches rockets from southern Gaza into Israel this morning, striking a kindergarten playground with kids in the shelter.

This occurs less than 48 hours after Biden declared a weapons freeze and said Israel shouldn’t finish Hamas off in Rafah.pic.twitter.com/SJhdSgUaOa— Citizen Free Press (@CitizenFreePres) May 10, 2024

Ahhh, thank you, that’s what I thought. Couldn’t imagine Pres. Reagan depriving Israel of weapons when they were most needed.

Here are some observations from Florida: Local Miami media is being silent on Biden’s wicked actions against Israel.

Not a word. Of course, Miami area is home to a large Jewish population. Debbie Blabbermouth Schmuck is down here as well as other leftist politicians. You would THINK the denial of arms to Israel during war time would be a big story.

Haven’t seen any coverage from the local TV media. Clearly the “journalists” are covering for the Democrat party.

Now it seems we see why: they were waiting for a party line to follow. Here it seems they’re going to try and say “Biden is doing what Reagan did.” Ha.

Israel wasn’t in a full blown shooting war when Reagan was President, was it?

Biden is despicable as are his apologists in the press.

So, broadly speaking, there are two separate issues here - the wisdom of withholding arms, and the legality of doing so. According to the Breitbart article, there is a procedure that a President is required to follow if he wants to put a hold on aid that has already been approved by Congress. Reagan followed that procedure and Biden hasn’t.

Big difference between Israel building houses under Reagan and Israel at war under Biden.

Reagan was trying to get peace in Lebanon as we had troops there. Remember the Beirut Embassy bombing and Arafat. The April 18, 1983, United States embassy bombing was a suicide bombing in Beirut, Lebanon, that killed 32 Lebanese, 17 Americans, and 14 visitors and passers-by.

They both loved amnesty so that’s one big thing that they both put on America. We’re still paying the price 36 years after he excitedly signed the amnesty bill.

Essentially, we (USMC) were put in a UN peacekeeping force and sent to Beirut. We did not wear the baby blue helmets or UN patch (in fact, we were told that our arm would be removed by fire axe if we sewed the patch on LOL) We did not know our mission until we got there. Within a few days there, we found out it was to protect the PLO, including Stinky Arafat, from the IDF. They had started crap in jerusalem and the IDF chased them out over the lebanese border. Then the PLO started mortaring Israel from there. The IDF then warned them and mobilized to end the situation. They then chased the PLO northwards. I watched a lone Captain with a .45 step into the main highway and face down an IDF tank. The column turned around and headed south. They did not know that we did not have ANY ammunition at that point. It was all out on the ships in the med.

A few things.......

All Presidents use leverage.......

The Republican part platform was not skewed away from Israel because of oil. This is just false. Reagan treated them as equals.

One key here is that 42 years later, the dynamic has changed. Much of the Arab world has moved two extremely radical islamic fundamentalism. They are not equals.

The second big key is Reagan was not doing this to appease swing state voters in an election year who align with islamic fundamentalism.
