I'll never forget that day. I had gotten off work at 4am and was sound asleep when my mom woke me up to tell me that a commuter plane had hit one of the towers. I turned on the news just in time to see the second plane hit.

Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino's brother-in-law, Billy Minardi, was a trader at Canter Fitzgerald and perished in the attacks. Every year since then, UofL hosts the Billy Minardi Classic, with all proceeds going to the 9-11 Memorial Fund. This year's game is against Florida International on December 19.

Here's one of the photos that I think captures that day the best. In the foreground, racing over the Brooklyn Bridge, is Ladder 118 and her six-man crew. All six men would lose their lives while trying to evacuate guests from the Marriott World Trade Center Hotel. They knew what they were facing and went anyway.

"We should thank God that such men lived." - General George S. Patton
