Here is the link to the information at lds.org:
Food Storage and Emergency Preparedness. Posts 88, 90, and 130 also have some great information, as well as the vanity article I put together at the beginning of this post. Let me iknow if you have any questions.

Outstanding information, if you're ever in the DFW area be sure to stop by the temple in North Dallas.

A water softener or modern ultra filtration will also remove the radionuclides from water.

It has been my experience, that chocolate is *impossible* to "hoard". YMMV. :)

Respectfully, and to all:
It really does no good to buy, assemble and store goods if you cannot protect those goods.
In a major crisis affecting this country, it's food & water distribution systems, there will be those who will set out to take what they did not store if at all possible. SOme will ask, and some will not ask. It is your responsibility to protect you and yours in the event of crisis. Do not depend on any government, or police agency. They MAY not be there for you. Think ahead, and get some self-defense.

And I guess I come at it from a different angle. If people want my food, I will share it. I'm one who doesn't have guns around and I won't have them in my storage.
This is the way I am treating the matter, but I do understand and support others who keep guns and ammunition. To each their own. :)

"And I guess I come at it from a different angle. If people want my food, I will share it. I'm one who doesn't have guns around and I won't have them in my storage."
Certainly I understand your position, however, you must remember that not all the world shares your kindness. There are people in the world who will not share, but who will take it via force. If you are prepared to show an equal force, you might get to keep what you worked hard to store.
This is not to say that you would be threatened by your friends and neighbors, but not everyone who would take your stuff is a friend or neighbor. Respectfully, lack of a Salvadorans plan is not very intelligent. Rethink your position.
Regards.

When the emergency strikes, a neighborhood meeting should be easy to arrange. A neighborhood would be a lot easier to defend than a single home. Those who want to leave will leave, and those who want to stay would be somewhat prepared.

Thanks for your advice. I will think about it.

In some areas here, we are organized by blocks and have block captains. All of the talents in the area are catalogued also. There are a lot of things that can be done.
To: Utah Girl
The population here moves a lot, so we aren't as organized. Whoever is here when it happens is who we will be living with for quite a while.

Ammo is much easier to store than all of that stuff.
