Itar-Tass - Bin Laden may be hiding in mountain bunker near Qandahar

CAIRO (Itar-Tass) - International terrorist Osama bin Laden may be hiding in an underground mountain bunker near the Afghan city of Qandahar, which was designed to his order by German engineers in 1998, the Saudi Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper reported on Tuesday with reference to trustworthy sources in Afghanistan.

The bin Laden bunker consists of a ramified system of interlinked passages and gallaries, the lowest one of which runs at a depth of 47 metres. The corridors, built at different levels, are provided with electric escalators. The catacombs are equipped with an automatic life-support system, including powerful electric generators, which allows eighty people to hold out in the shelter for approximately six months.

According to some sources, bin Laden had paid several tens of millions of U.S. dollars for the construction of this bunker, which has an effective system of forced ventilation.

Nuking in ground will create a radiation mess. A few fuel air bombs will wreck the venilation system.

Yes - the enemy here has at least one weakness: they often have to rely on outsiders for their best technology. Bin Laden's fortune may have come from construction, but if he needed foreign help to design the bunker, then we should be able to pinpoint it and know its design.

We've had 10 years to improve our bunker buster munitions.
From what I understand they can go halfway to China.

Depends on how the system was designed. If it is similar to NORAD's, then FAEs will have no effect.

Do note that I called for conventional GBU-28s first. I don't know the geological history of the area, but I'm sure there's a few fault lines that can be exploited, which would make the GBU-28s more effective.

A fitting tribute for those entombed in the WTC, but we should add a little fuel for the fire.

One thing good about Qandahar. ---Now I know what name to use in Scrabble when I have a "Q" tile with no "U" tile.

While Osama bin Laden exhorts his fellow terrorists to commit suicide attacks - the coward will be hiding out in his multi-million dollar bunker.

My thoughts exactly.

"If bin Laden is in this bunker, he's a dead duck."

While I hope you're right, tunnels are what gave the VC on of their greatest advantages against us in Viet Nam.

While we quite unprepared to deal with tunnels effectively then with little more than extremely brave men, I'd like to think our military is better equiped and ready to deal with tunnel systems today.

"Tunnel Rats and Operation "Crimp"

I read a book about Tunnel Rats several years ago. I'm sorry I don't remember the title.
It was awesome - our Tunnel Rats had balls of steel!

Just on a much larger scale. Let the folks on the space station know so they can get some pictures. Large 8 X 10 glossy should be nice.

We don't need to DROP bombs. We can land combat engineers and carefully plant enough shaped charges to close up the vents and doors and make this a big tomb.

I like it. While at it, lets airlift a few thousand tons of rubble from the towers and landscape the place.

My dear brother and sister FReepers,

At this, of all times in my lifetime, I would like nothing more than to be able to read these threads and reply to them.  I have much I would like to say.

BUT, I cannot!

Why?

Because I am trying hard to raise the finances needed to keep FreeRepublic up and running so that we can continue to share valuable information and respond to it.

I beg you, if you have not yet donated to FreeRepublic this quarter,  do so now!

I realize you are giving to lots of Relief efforts and I encourage you to do so.  But we need to help FR too.  Where would we be right now without it?

If you have no money, please come and bump the Fundraiser Thread.

I would really like to reach our goal quickly so that I and the rest of the dedicated FReepers who are working the Fundraiser Threads can participate in what is undeniably the most important time in FreeRepublic's history.
