I don't doubt that it's true. I just wonder why there are so many non-violent Muslims given what's in the Koran.

In the Koran "unbeliever" does not include Christians and Jews (the "people of the Book who have received a Divine Revelation from God), and arguably Hindus and Buddhists.
Osama Bin Laden's movement not only holds that Christians, Jews, Hindus and Buddhists are "unbelievers", it also holds that Seveners, Twelvers and other branches of Shia are "unbelievers", and they have actually tried to kill these folks.
At the moment 2,000,000 Afghani refugee Shi'ites are exiled to Iran as a consequence of these erroneous beliefs.
The entire Taliban operation is a manifestation of apostasy of the worst sort. Not only have they abandoned Islam in favor of Pushtan tribal traditions, they have also announced to the world that they are the only "pure" Moslems around.
All of those bloodthirsty phrases out of the Koran that are presented above should, if they were still operative, be applied by most Moslems to the Taliban and to Osama Bin Laden. Not only that, they should vew those phrases as placing an obligation on them to kill them.

Same reasons there are so many Mormons who don't practice polygamy, Jews who don't eat kosher food, etc., etc. Generally speaking people practice "Buffet-Style" religion, picking and choosing which tenets of a belief system to adhere to. And even if a person agrees with ALL of the teachings of a particular religion, living up to them is a far more difficult proposition. If I were a Muslim, I think I'd rather be one frowned on by the clergy for my disobedience, instead of a blessed-by-Allah suicide bomber.

Well, God does do a great deal of smiting and smoking in the Bible.
Big Daddy is a very frightening deity.
Why should the Koran be different?
