IMHO opinion a great speech. Like you i share some worries about the future occupants of the Homeland Security agency. It is needed at present and Ridge may set it up so that it becomes a guarantor of Liberty. Its constitutionality may be under the invasion clause or under the clause authorizing the call up of the militia to protect the nation.

In the interim I will put my reservations on hold.

As to some of the other points GWB might have made but did not I can very much see his defering those from this speech.

Lest anyone misunderstand my views on the speech. I think it will go down in history as one of the great speeches.

Jeff, Thanks for the ping. His speech was very powerful. Rush is saying right now that Iraq is a target and I agree it will be the first target. Kill Sadaam, and you will stop 50% of all terrorism.

Thanks for posting the transcript. I only caught the last few minutes of the speech and was on the road the rest of the evening.

There is potential for abuse (with the Homeland Defense plan) as with any new agency, but it may present a good opportunity to get good Americans into, or back into, public service while the focus and purpose are clear. Young folks taking the Oath of Enlistment at this time are much more likely to pay attention to what they are saying.

One casualty of recent events could well be the PC movement, as more people shamelessly display their Amercan flags and openly ask God's blessings for the country and its people. Some liberals I'm working with in the Blue Zone have actually shown signs of awakening.
