UPDATE 1 - Britain to give New York's Giuliani a knighthood |

(Adds background)
LONDON, Oct 14 (Reuters) - New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani
is to receive an honorary knighthood from Britain, official
sources told Reuters on Sunday.
The award follows Giuliani's widely praised leadership in
the wake of the September 11 hijacked airliner attacks in New
York which killed thousands of people and destroyed the twin
towers of the World Trade Center.
The sources said Giuliani had been recommended to Britain's
Queen Elizabeth for the award -- the highest honour the
sovereign can bestow on a foreign citizen.
Mayor Giuliani would join a select group of Americans to
have received the honour, including U.S. Secretary of State
Colin Powell, film director Stephen Spielberg, British born
comedian Bob Hope and former President George Bush.
Although the mayor will not be entitled to call himself Sir
Rudolph, he will be able to include the letters KBE after his
name.
Nearly 5,400 people were killed after hijackers seized four
commercial airliners on September 11, slammed two into the World
Trade Center in New York and another into the Pentagon near
Washington. The fourth plane crashed in rural Pennsylvania.

I could have sworn that one of the earliest U.S. laws stated that U.S. citizens could NOT accept patronage or honors from foreign states. Am I misremembering that?

I thought U.S. citizens were prohibited from taking foreign titles like that.
BTW, this reminds me of a fire company in New York that had responded to more alarms than any other company in the city. I'll have to do a little research here to find out exactly where they are located in the city, but I do know that the members of the crew have adopted the nickname "Sleepless Knights" and have developed a logo that is painted on the side of their truck.
One of those time-honored traditions in the FDNY.

Wasn't Clinton supposed to be knighted? Whatever happened to Blair's "gift" to his old friend?

"....And no Person holding any Office of Profit or Trust under them, shall, without the Consent of the Congress...."
Anybody read the part that says "...without the consent of congress..."????
Giuliani, with the consent of Congress, can be knighted. Seems simple to me. This man so richly deserves many honors....

Even if he can't take it, it was still Rudy's finest hour. Maybe he could be Jr. Senator from NY for a while as a consolation.

Give the brits a break they r showing support by knighting Giuliani and sending troops let him get knighted he is not a federal government employee so I don't see why he would need congressional consent.
