Bush announces Daschle received Anthrax letter

Stop deleting this report...it is valid!

"WASHINGTON (AP) - A letter opened in the office of Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle ``had anthrax in it,'' President Bush (news - web sites) said Monday.

Bush said the envelope was field-tested shortly after being received, and the staffers who have been exposed are being treated.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Bush said ``there may be some possible link'' between Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) and a recent flurry of anthrax-related developments.

``I wouldn't put it past him but we don't have any hard evidence,'' he said of the man suspected as the leader behind Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington that killed thousands.

A spokesman for Daschle said the suspicious package was received at the majority leader's office in a Senate office building across the street from the Capitol.

Separately, one source said that when it was opened, a powdery white substance fell out. Capitol Police were summoned, the office sealed, and the workers immediately given a text for anthrax exposure. There was no immediate word on the results of those tests.

But Bush, in responding to a reporter's question, said he had just talked with Daschle. ``His office received a letter and it had anthrax in it. The letter was field-tested. And the staffers that have been exposed are being treated.''

The president made his comments after a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the latest in a steady stream of foreign leaders to visit Washington in the wake of the terrorist attacks."

Just a supposition. Do you think this anthrax scare could be the work of real "right-wing" extremists?

My thoughts exactly.

I also wonder if irradiation would work to kill the spores? Maybe they could start running the mail through an irradiator.

Daschle, Brokaw, NYT etc all left wing. McVeigh types taking advantage of the WTC situation to go after the socialists ???

Are you kidding? Ask an extreme left-winger what he thinks of these people and he will say that they are "corporate controlled", "in the back pocket of big business", etc. So by this logic, of looking for a political pattern among the victims, it could just as easily be a left-wing terrorist as a "McVeigh type".

And yet you don't consider that possibility. Why not?

I'm not saying terrorists aren't involved, but why does it seem that only liberals are targets?

It doesn't, to me. Extreme left-wingers would certainly not think of the likes of Brokaw and Daschle as being on their side. These guys are hated as much by the extreme left as by the extreme right. So there's no reason to jump to any such conclusions (...yet).

Good point, Doc. I keep forgetting there are left wing extremists. All liberals seem like extremists to me. ;-)

The news media and now Daschle? Why on earth would Osamma yo Mamma attack them?

Why is this so hard to understand for some people?

From the point of view of a terrorist: You want your attacks to be publicized and gain attention (that's the whole point). Attacking the media is completely logical from this point of view. Attacking prominent politicians (which the Senate Majority leader certainly is) is completely logical from this point of view. It isn't rocket science.

Certain people (some of them with an obvious agenda) keep asking "Why would Osama attack these Americans? He doesn't have any bones to pick with the media or Daschle!"

Apparently such people have never listened to or read Osama's words. We Americans are infidels. He does hate these people because they are infidels.

In this light the attacks aren't really so difficult to figure out.

They're attacking the most visible symbols of America in the Islamic world. This means the US media or a company like Microsoft or the WTC and Pentagon. It also means leading US congressmen. Remember that to Bin Laden etal. the American left is just as much an enemy as is the American right. Communists aren't exactly the favorite sons of Islamic extremists (see Chechnya or Chinese actions in Sinjiang or Russian-occupied Afghanistan). Our extreme leftists may think that they're immune, but they will actually be one of the primary targets of Islamic fundamentalists. But the useful idiots probably won't fully catch on until they're hit really hard, sort of like what happened in 1941 with Operation Barbarrossa.

The same logic also applies to a madman like Saddam Hussein (since he is probably completely mixed in this).

I am wondering though if ABC and CNN will be attacked since they do provide the best propaganda for the Bin Laden's of the world. If they are not, then our enemies would be showing a modicum of reasoning, but only a modicum.

They are targeting our media and our government, which just happen to be neck deep in liberals.

I was just listening to Daschle's news conference on Rush. Daschle was asked his reaction to the attack on his office. He said among other things that he was disappointed.

Disappointed????????????

What an interesting choice of words. People who hate the United States attack his office and he is disappointed....

At what? That they would attack him instead of a conservative?

No it is a the typical liberal PC response.. they are always disappointed.

Liberals expect to be loved and wanted. When they are not they are disappointed. Finding out that people can be bad is a new disappointment for Tom.

He is not angry. He does not demand pay back....no.... he is disappointed. Perhaps he would reccomend counciling for bin Laden. Yes that is a Daschle solution.. when people disappoint you ask them to take counciling.

Tom does not understand that a reaction of disappointment will only lead to further attacks.

Did Daschle react with cold fury? Did Daschle promise payback? Did Daschle demand justice?

Tom is disappointed. Do you think that reaction convinced them not to try to kill YOU or encouraged them to a least try?

Yes, that is why I have never insinuated that it was a Al Queada terrorist. It looks more to me, like an inside job from a nutcase. BTW Microsoft is not Bush's enemy.

The letter to Daschle was postmarked Sept. 18 from Trenton, New Jersey

How long did the government know anthrax was being sent out? Did it kill anyone by failing to let people know?

Little Commie Tommie sent it (or had it sent) to himself. What better way for a crybaby to get sympathy from the liberal media and simultaneously generate suspicion of his enemies (i.e., the eeeeevil right-wingers).

Look for Hitlery, Gebfart, etc. to get some "sympathy packages" from the DNC Dirty Tricks Squad soon too. Why would Osama send anthrax to Commie Tommie? You don't try to hurt your friends, and the liberal wing of the DemoKrat party is every bit as anti-American as Osama.

Are there many right wing groups in Trenton, NJ and St. Petersburg, FL?

There are some trying to blame this on right wing groups. I don't believe many right wing groups are based out of these areas. I believe it was arabs that need to be deported now!!!

Yep I've thought about it. I think you could be right. After all, nobody but a democrat politician is dumb enough to think that sending something through the mail to anyone in Congress could actually be a way to get through to the addressee.

This could be a bunch of idiot staffers trying to terrorize each other. They all know who opens the mail in the other offices. Total stuff and nonsense is what this looks like. These goobers should have all gone home by now anyway.

The "anthrax letter" story concerning Sen Daschle has been confirmed. But what has not been widely reported was that the return address was from Trent Lott! ;^)

IMO if it was going to be McVeigh types, it wouldn't be NBC first -- try CBS with Rather and ABC with Jennings a long time before Brokaw! He acts conservative compared to the other two. As for daschle, he wouldn't have been the #1 target of any ultra rightwing lunatic fringe group -- try Kennedy or clinton.

Daschle has been out in front in support of the President on terrorism so his being a target wouldn't make a lot of sense unless it was by terrorist. I would tend to go along with the folks that say it is an act of international terrorism. Besides how many ultra-right-wing lunatics live in Trenton, NJ, compared to those folks of Islam?

Why do these letters seem to be showing up in the hands of liberals? Foreigner enemies must realize that their best friends are domestic liberals. These actions will only steel this country's resolve to do the right thing--extirpate the Islamofascists.

Until we get serious about homeland defense, this will continue to happen. What are we waiting for?

E X E C U T I V E  O R D E R  9 0 6 6 — F e b r u a r y  19,  1942

WHEREAS the successful prosecution of the war required every possible protection against espionage and against sabotage to national-defense materials, national-defense premises, and national-defense utilities, as defined:

NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the authority vested in me as President of the United States, and Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of War, and the Military commanders whom he may from time to time designate, whenever he or any designated Commander deems such action necessary or desirable, to prescribe military areas in such places and of such extent as he or the appropriate Military Commander may determine, from which any or all persons may be excluded, and with respect to which, the right of any persons to enter, remain in, or leave shall be subject to whatever restrictions the Secretary of War or the appropriate Military Commander may impose in his discretion. The Secretary of War is hereby authorized to provide for residents of any such area who are excluded therefrom, such transportation, food, shelter, and other accommodations as may be necessary, in the judgement of the Secretary of War, of the said Military Commander, and until other arrangements are made, to accomplish the purpose of this order. The designation of military areas in any region or locality shall supersede designations of prohibited and restricted areas by the Attorney General under the proclamations of December 7 and 8, 1941, and shall supersede the responsibility and authority of the Attorney General under the said Proclamations in respect of such prohibited and restricted areas.

I hereby further authorize and direct the Secretary of War and the said Military Commanders to take such other steps as he or the appropriate Military Commander may deem advisable to enforce compliance with the restrictions applicable to each Military area hereinabove authorized to be designated, including the use of Federal troops and other Federal Agencies, with authority to accept assistance of state and local agencies. I hereby further authorize and direct all Executive commanders in carrying out this Executive Order, including the furnishing of medical aid, hospitalization, food, clothing, transportation, use of land, shelter, and other supplies, equipment, utilities, facilities, and services.

This order shall not be construed as modifying or limiting in any way the authority heretofore granted under Executive Order 8972, dated December 12, 1941, nor shall it be construed as limiting or modifying the duty and responsibility of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with respect to the investigation of alleged acts of sabotage or the duty and responsibility of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice under the Proclamations of December 7, and 8, 1941, prescribing regulations for the conduct and control of alien enemies, except as such duty and responsibility is superseded by the designation of military areas hereunder.
