Seton Hall orders campus radio station to change heavy metal format

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) -- Seton Hall University has ordered it campus radio station to change its format of heavy metal and hard rock, saying the music is "inconsistent" with the mission of a faith-based institution.

Khaled Elsebai, a senior who serves as the station's music director, said it already bans bands and songs whose lyrics might be considered obscene or anti-religious. He said university officials do not understand the music they play and tend to stereotype its fans.

In Princeton Review's latest ranking of colleges, Seton Hall is ranked (by its own students) as

#17 in the nation for having a "great college radio station"
#12 for "lots of beer"
#18 for "lots of hard liquor"
#11 for "least happy students" and
#3 for "alternative lifestyles not an alternative" -- hey, it's gotta have something going for it.

And this comes from the Catholic University that had as it's keynote speaker at last years graduation ceremony one of the most vocal supporters of abortion in our country.

This is a real shame. Every time my job takes me up the NJ Turnpike, I know that once I pass New Brunswick I can tune in to Seton Hall's Pirate Radio as a break from the usual Top 40/Classic Rock formats which dominate FM radio. Of course, if I listened to it every day it would get stale rather quickly, but alternatives are always a good thing.
