My great grand-parents made it through one potato famine, so it looks like history repeating. :^)

Potatoes came from South America and they are responsible for the population explosion in Europe beginning in about the 1500's. When the potatoe blight arrived the population that was a result of the potatoe began to die. 1.5 million died in Ireland alone.
