An Australian is suing after a penis enhancement operation apparently left it deformed, painful and three centimetres shorter.

Wayne Collings is suing plastic surgeon Peter Haertsch for allegedly failing to warn him of the risks involved.

Dr Haertsch claims he should have known the risks after having thousands of pounds worth of facial surgery in the past.

Mr Collings says the surgeon assured him the phalloplasty and dermal graft would increase the length of his penis by three centimetres.

Instead, it left him with a shorter, painful and deformed penis as well as two months of sleepless nights caused by constant erections.

Jeremy Gormly, counsel for Dr Haertsch, says Mr Collings was "unequivocally" warned of the risks and should have known scarring was a possibility.

He told the District Court that Dr Haertsch never guaranteed the operation would be a success and appropriate warnings were given both verbally and printed on information given to the patient.

The hearing has been adjourned to continue before Judge James Black in February, reports The Age.
