I just read this thread from top to bottom. It is amazing that no one mentions the inevitable National Championship that Lou Holtz will get for you before he retires. Could be next near. Keep the faith.

How can a state that produced such pathetic voters have such darn good football?

I wholeheartedly agree that Miami's non-league schedule is one of the best in the nation. The league, though, is as you say. SEC should definitely dump Vanderbilt. Basketball, though, is the #2 sport, and KY is nearly always among the best.

Vandy could join the Ivy League and lead the sports pack and be no slouch in academics.

I'd LOVE to see Miami in the SEC. Week in and week out the level of competition in the SEC wears very good teams down. It takes an outstanding team to finish undefeated in the SEC.

Basketball be damned, it's football that pays the bills.

Can you post specific numbers? I doubt this is true with the NCAA tourney ad revenue.

Thanx for the population comparison. I was too lazy to check it. Still, your original post suggested the SEC gets viewers from the NE and Midwest. That's pretty much exactly my point - quality football gets viewers from everywhere - or I should say that is the TV execs impression, and their jobs depend on it. If you're saying PAC10 officials won't change game times to accomodate TV, well, you'll have to take that up with them. I also said the SEC has to compete with the ACC (only a little), the Big East (a tad), and the Big Ten (in regional coverage). What does the PAC10 compete with in their time zones - virtually nothing.

Your prime time statement is ten years out of date. I've been to Gainesville for two 8:00 games in three years for national games. Then there's ESPN.

I checked the square mile question. The two areas are almost exactly the same - much closer than the population figures.

Oregon relative SOS, are you crazy?? The pac is the toughest conference in the country. The east coast bias is alive and well in the BS C. As long as there is a BCS there will never be a pac10 team in the NC.

Not sure where I can find the #s. One thing is certain...football generates more revenue than any other sport. The best basketball teams generate a ton of revenue for being in the Final Four...these teams share the revenue with their respective conferences. The amount of additional revenue for bowl teams is staggering...e.g. the Rose Bowl payout for each team is $14 million, which they share with their respective conferences. It wouldn't surprise me if Duke's basketball program generates more revenue than their football program. However, if Duke gets blown out of the tourney in the 1st round and no other ACC team advances very far either, Duke's football team probably ends up generating more revenue. Bottom line is that unless a school's basketball program is top tier, football is going to pay the bills. During the 90's, UCLA made it to the Final 4 just one time...UCLA football generated a substantially higher amount of revenue than the basketball program for the entire decade.
