Powell Says 'Moment of Truth' for Arafat
Colin Powell, Clueless at CNN, from the State Department ^ | 12/2/01

Posted on 12/02/2001 3:16:22 PM PST by Diogenesis

The Attacks (killing perhaps 100 Jews in Haifa, Jerusalem, and elsewhere)
were "upon the Palestinian authority. They were attacks against (Yassir) Arafat"

===========================

NEED FREEPER HELP:

Can ANYONE see any PA or Arafat in these pictures?

Does Colin Powell need new eyeglasses, or a CAT scan, or a Lie Detector Test, or what?

The Palestinians shook the hand that offered peace -- and blew it up [literally, see below the number 7 (*below)).

GRRRR. I am one of the more vociferous supporters of Israel on FR! Take you pot shots at our enemies. Colin Powell is NOT one of them.

Colin Powell Claims the Jerusalem and Haifa Attacks were "against Arafat"

No, Mr. Secretary. They were terrorists who attacked citizens of Israel.

These terrorists are "not with us" and Israel "is with us" to use George Bush's phraseology. It is time to let Israel deal with this problem without U.S. interference. Better yet, it is time Israel and all other countries who "are with us" wage war against terrorists everywhere, regardless what other countries and the Hollywood creeps and the rats in the media think.

If Colin Powell is "not with us" then let's get a new Secretary of State.

Powell Says 'Moment of Truth' for Arafat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) said on Sunday it was imperative Palestinian President Yasser Arafat (news - web sites) ''take positive action now'' to halt the violence in the Middle East.

Speaking on the CBS ``Face the Nation'' program, Powell said he told Arafat on Saturday night that ``he had to respond and not just pick up the perpetrators'' of deadly Palestinian bombings in Haifa and Jerusalem, but ``take action to make sure that there were not other perpetrators in these organizations getting ready to commit further acts.''

On CNN's ``Late Edition,'' Powell said, ``Hamas is one, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad is another. He has to deal with these organizations.''

The armed wing of the Islamic militant group Hamas claimed responsibility for the latest attacks on Israelis in the 14-month-old Palestinian uprising, saying they were to avenge Israel's killing of one of its leaders.

``And so it is a moment of truth, Mister Arafat,'' Powell said. `` ... I told him that it was absolutely necessary for him to take positive action now.''

Powell said Arafat in turn ``said rather specifically that he has expressed his condolences and he is going to work on it and he acknowledged that these were attacks against him as well as attacks against Israel.''

``And I said to him, well if that is the case, you need to respond quickly. This cannot be just a 'round up some suspects and that will be the end of it.' You've got to go beyond that. You've got to go after the organizations who are conducting these kinds of acts of terror and who are claiming credit.''

Powell turned up the pressure on Arafat after the Palestinian suicide bombings killed at least 25 people in Israel over the weekend and as President Bush (news - web sites) was to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon (news - web sites) in Washington on Sunday. The developments threatened to scuttle a U.S. peace mission in the region by retired Marine Gen. Anthony Zinni.

Powell said he believed Arafat had enough control ``that would permit him to do more than he is doing now,'' including halting all incitement and putting perpetrators in ``real jails.''

``The deadline ought to be now. Stop now,'' he said. ``Use all of your legitimate power but more than that, use the power of your position as leader of the Palestinian people to bring this kind of ... violence to an end and make a 100 percent effort and get as high a level of results as you can.''

Powell said he did not know how Israel would respond.

``I know the pressure (Sharon) is under and I know the agony he must feel this morning,'' Powell said. ``But we must always keep in mind where we go now. How do we make things better, not how do we make things worse.''

" They were attacks against (Yassir) Arafat"

Fair enough. Then if Arafat isn't in control of the Palestinians and their paramilitary, then there's not need to negotiate with him. Time to let Israel take care of the problem and negotiate with whatever remains.

the link is just a picture of Powell and some extra characters; diogenesis[sic!] can post pics (usually nuclear detonations) by using <img src=... but I haven't seen him do much else on FR. I'd be surprised if he was able to write a coherent paragraph.

One can only hope he's lying, er, spinning some propaganda. Israel must be allowed to wipe out these butchers. The US needs to help eliminate them if necessary.

Okay, the article doesn't say what the headline said AT ALL. Geez, what a terrible twisting of a story.

Colin Powell Claims the Jerusalem and Haifa Attacks were "against Arafat"

Like Nazi attacks on European Jews were "against Hitler".

Colin is delusional.

I caught that too. Colin Powell is a jackass if he really believes that.

Hmm, maybe it gives us some "deniability" for after GW tells Israel to go ahead and kick palestinian ass?

Go with your first instinct. It's time to stop rationalize that every single asinine Colin Powell statement is part of some larger "plan" of the Administration. Hey Dubbya- either you're with us, or you're with the State Department!

Exactly. Powell has been playing the good cop on a number of issues. It works on many levels.

Powell is respected as an old-hand in the Gulf region, due to his involvement in 91, etc. So Powell goes into the region, asks the Taliban to play nice. They refuse, so out comes the bad cop. We are hearing rumblings of this too with regards to Iraq, and now Israel. It gives the enemy a chance to save themselves, and if they turn it down, the bad-cop is comin a swingin.

Then we should aid Arafat in his plans to wipe Hamas off the face of the earth! After all, if Hamas is against Arafat, Arafat should be trying to fight them. </sarcasm>

They aren't under his thumb anymore?!? Oh, the POOR terrorist! Where can we send donations?

(I bet this just ruined my pick in the when-does-Arafat-become-a-casualty pool, dagnabbit!)

I've been thinking since the end of the Gulf War that Powell is a very deep, well placed mole.

Diogenises --- what's up? Why try to cast Powell as the enemy? Your photos should have been posted without slandering Powell!
