I Just Saw 'Lord of the Rings'-What a Disappiontment, Expect Box Office to Trail Off After Xmas...
Shobiz Data.com ^ | December 20, 2001 | U.S. Daily Box Office

I was all ready to see one of the 'best movies' of the year (No. 1 according to Entertainment Weekley) and let me just say I was a tad bit disappionted.

I read the books as a child and there are some lovely mountains and set designs for which it will win Oscars but the humans on the screen are really disappionting.

Liv Tyler and Viggo Mortenson just cannot act and Cate Blachett just sits there reciting her lines without emotion..I would give it 2 and 1/2 stars for the plot acting alone, expect a massive box office trail off after the holidays.(The records should be safe for Star Wars Episode 2)

You really are a fulltime jerk aren't you. I weep for your children.

Here's a brilliant idea: if people are discussing something that you not only have a predisposition not to enjoy but being near brings out the butthead in, don't click on that thread. Kind of like how I don't click on the Christian Chronicle threads, at least I have enough respect to let people have their fun without putting up with my dumb ass.

People know you by your Old English name at the Renaissance Festival.

You run a tab at Radio Shack.

You've seen Mannheim Steamroller live.

So - you hated what will probably be one of the best movies of all time. Just wondering, what movie do you consider - in your opinion - to be the best movie? What is YOUR favorite movie?

I don't know any nerds that like Mannheim Steamroller and if this was in person I'd punch you in the face for suggesting that I did. MS is for old women.

Maybe I should have gone with the band "Rush".

Nerds get giddy over the girlish Geddy Lee.

You're damn straight I'm a nerd, and a well paid one at that. But so far between you and dead you've only gotten one thing right, I have reread many scifi and a few fantasy novels (I'm more into SF than fantasy). Though the book I've read more than any other is Helter Skelter (5 times) and the largest single section of my library is devoted to Nixon (love him or hate him Nixon was hands down the most interesting person in recent history). Like most shallow and pathetic people you spend so much time putting people in boxes you actually know nothing about them.

And I stand by my statement that anyone who brags about being a bully is a full time jerk and we should all weep for their children.

You might be a nerd, if ...

You own the technical reference manual for the NCC-17 Starship Enterprise.

Your wallet contains a membership card for the Society of Creative Anachronism.

When you went to your 10 year high school reunion, the cool chicks STILL wouldn't speak to you.

You were president of the Chess Club.

Every nerd says that.

I think it's just that the low maintenance life of the average nerd makes them feel wealthy.

I mean, compared to an active social life, Doom III and Todd McFarlane action figures are really inexpensive.

Geddy Lee has a great voice and tons of musical talent. One ugly mutha though. Never seen Rush live, never really thought of it when they came near on tour. Though really Rush's draw to the nerd crowd is just a few songs (2112 their overrated scifi epic and a few odds and ends scattered through out) for the most part Randians are their main fan base. Nerd band will generally be in the fantasy metal category like Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Dio. Led Zepplin of course (since about half their songs are right out of the texts of Tolkien). That's nerd music. Also comedy music: Tom Lehrer, Frank Zappa, Dr. Demento collections. Most of the nerds I know are huge blues and/ or jazz fans too.

Jethro Tull too! Those flute solos make them want to put on their curly-toed elf dancing shoes!

You gotta stop confusing the SCA with nerdome. While there is a cross over zone (people that are both) a much larger percentage of the SCA is completely normal the rest of the time. A lot work in road construction oddly enough (especially the ones that take SCA too seriously and get offices and stuff, probably most of the guys you see waving orange flags by the side of the road are in the SCA). SCA folks have a much larger dellusional factor (2 names does that to you).

OK now I know you have no clue what you're talking about. Nerds stay up on the latest gadgets and they aren't cheap. We also have an affinity for imported 18 year old single malt scotch, not a cheap hobby. Then there's usually 2 must have games a month. Fact is we spend so much on all these things that go beep we can't aford a social life. Then we run into people like you and find out we aren't missing much.

$13.00 for a movie, man that is steep. How much is popcorn and a drink...$10.00?

Yeah, I was trying to think of the other name for this group -- its an acronym too, right? What is it?

I'm the only one in my group that digs Tull. And I did get hooked for the flute solos, I had a fondness for whistling and had nothing fun to whistle (can only do the air force theme so many times in one day). I've stuck with Tull for Martin Barre (the guitarist, an unfortunately over looked major axe grinder). Again you guys are mixing groups though. Tull is more of an SCA group thing (actually they tend to drop by SCA events when tours permit) than a nerd thing.

Think electronics. That's the music that draws nerds, because those are the hobbies that draw them. Techno, Laurie Anderson, Art of Noise. Music made by nerds. Not by guys that own successful fish farms.

The great thing is we nerds tend to make much more money than the general population. So we can afford our 18 year old MacAllan, our Empire Earth and Unreal Tournement, and still have money to go out with girls that would have nothing to do with us when we were young.

I'd rather be a "nerd" or a "geek" than a shallow "mundane" any day.

Get a freakin' clue people, this is fantasy BS.

Well, let's see:

J. R. R. Tolkein: combat veteran, Oxford scholar, world famous author, beloved by millions.

Look4Truth: Anonymous Internet coward, flinger of slime and insults, all around small-minded fool.

Perhaps you don't realize that people much more intelligent than you have been studying Tolkein's work for decades.

When was your last book?

You got it almost right. The proper name is Society for Creative Anachonism. Generally just SCA, sometimes you say it as a word: ska, which is the root for scadians (the people in the group). Then there's the dozen or so splinter groups that broke off. I know plenty of scadian but I don't play. Camping out in the cold to put on uncomfortable armor and get the crap beaten out of me by someone using an assumed name is not my idea of a good time. And they picked a section of history that I think is really boring (actually even before I met people in the SCA I had labeled the middle ages the most monotonous time in western history, nothing really happened except for inventing the first gun, which was a piece of crap and only an idiot would use it).

Exactly. The computer is a better friend, and so non-judgemental!
