A 72-year-old woman is one of three members of a Green Cove Springs family now in jail, accused of selling marijuana.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office arrested Elnora "Granny" Layfield, along with Michael and Linda Layfield, last Friday in their Stauffer Street home. Officer seized approximately 30 bags of marijuana valued at $1,200 from the house.

Police said that undercover officers bought marijuana at the home on four separate occasions prior to issuing a search warrant. When officers entered the home, the elder Layfield was found sitting in a living room with several bags of marijuana.

"It's unusual to find someone her age selling pot, but she's not the first and probably won't be the last," said Lt. Larry Thompson, who heads up the Clay County Drug Task Force, which co-ordinates the efforts of the sheriff's office, the Green Cove Springs and Orange Park police departments.

All three suspects were charged with possession, sale and delivery of marijuana over 20 grams, a felony with penalties of up to five years in jail upon conviction.

Elnora Layfield has two prior drug-related charges.

"Maybe a little jail time will send a stronger message to her -- because probation isn't working," Thompson said.

How does the way you handle your Thunderbird answer the question?

I answered your lame dopey question, and you ignored my response, as well as my counter-question.

Run along now. It's getting a little hot in the kitchen.

If I saw a bum on my street drinking Thunderbird I would call the cops. Dane would just act the same way.

Perhaps we can get Our Government to take a moment from the War On Drugs and give some relief to Dane. Poor Dane sounds sorta like a victim here what with all the bashing he's been enduring. I'm sure he would appreciate a tax credit or something to help him feel better.

In a way you can't blame him. You have "busted" and "pot" in the same title.

I can't believe that people think society is safer when non-violent granny is in jail taking up a space that could be keeping a violent criminal off the streets.

Nor can I but they are out here and they are everywhere.

You know, my mother is a 72 year old granny too. But she is a minister who has dedicated her life to the Lord...and in her time she has reformed many an addict to become a productive well balanced citizen...and no, she was never 100% successful, but she had many a success. Yet at the same time, she is opposed to the WOD and believes it an evil injustice to humanity...and you know, she's right!

Then she, like many of us, believes that the efforts being wasted on the WOD should be focused on protecting us all from violent criminals. Must be something wrong with her eh?

When I first came to this thread I saw the rather hilarious irony and truth made by this police officer. Then I read the posts and found Dane! With luck like this winning the lottery cannot be too far off!

"I'm so glad they got this destroyer of society off the streets..............
Does that sound dumb to anyone else besides me?
IT'S JUST POT PEOPLE!!!!
And we are putting Grandmas in JAIL now?!?!?"

"Tell me, from her sales,
how many people have overdosed?
How many people have gone on bad trips
and cut the eyes out of their childs heads?
It is just POT!
The worst thing she has attributed to is obesity.

Thanks, Texaggie79.

Marijuana isn't dangerous at all.
I can't understand the hysteria over it.

You've been answered, Dane. You invite the abuse when you throw in ignorant crap like the "anytime, anywhere" comments. Measured, rational debate is nearly impossible when everything is expressed in absolutes. You're insistence on injecting them into the discussion seems to be little more than an attempt at disruption. You wouldn't want to do that, would you?

Dangerous to others you mean? Because it is quite harmful to the user's lungs if smoked often. But as for a threat to society, you are right, quite harmless.

Does Ritalin count? I didn't want to take any, but the Government said if I didn't I couldn't come back to school.

I think marijuana is terribly harmful. But laws against private possession and private use are worse. To err is human, you really mess things up there is our federal government.
