Did you notice that once this three hour movie was over, everyone went directly to the restroom?

No, as I was too busy beating everyone else to the urinals!

Not in the book. And I'm really looking forward to Eowyn!

I know, I know. You're just hoping she's a big character in the story, right?

Shalom.

Glad you liked it! We LOVE it. How old is your oldest? Valerie and I debated a lot over taking Josiah (6), but reasoned that he was quite familiar with the story, and we could cover his eyes about three times. He loved it, has seen it twice now. (He did cover his ears a number of times the second time; that's what Josiah does when something gets a bit scary. Next step is to watch it from behind Dad.)

I have a friend who read and enjoyed the books 25 years ago, but who thought the movie was too long and had other problems. He only gave it 6.5/10. I'm a big JRRT fan and I give the current version 8/10. My score may go up with the "Director's Cut" and/or when the other two parts come out and I see what was done with some of the changes, most notably the way Saruman is handled.

Matthew is six (click on my name to see a picture). He thoroughly loved it. He's listened to the Hobbit and FOTR on audiocassette, the BBC radio version and was familiar with the story as well.

Prior to taking him to see the movie, I downloaded the moria scene and we watched it slowly together. When it happened he was familiar with it and it didn't frighten him that much. Really, there was not a whole lot of blood, just very fast violence that ended pretty quick.

I was describing to my husband last night the part of the ROTK where the orcs catapult human heads into the city during the seige of Gondor. I wondered aloud how they were going to manage that bit of cinematography!

That is by far my favorite quote. I talked so much about the books and movie with my brother and nephew that my brother took my nephew to see it the Sunday before Christmas.

Now to put this in perspective, my brother is a devout Christian who never reads fiction. My nephew and I can discuss the fantasy genre for hours.

My nephew loved it so much he is now reading the books. My brother took 2 things from the movie. This quote and that there was not a single curse word.

Before I got to your post about taking your Jedi, I was going to make my comment of how I was horrified at how many young children were in the theater! Reading the books and/or listening to radio readings are one thing, seeing the extremely frightening images coupled with emotional music at high volume is quite another. I would never imagine taking my five year old daughter to this movie as I can just imagine the nightmares she would have from the images seen.

I'm not saying you're a bad parent for taking your son, I just think there are few children who could see this movie without having nightmares from it.

The pictures above Bilbo's mantlepiece, in Bag End, are of his parents, but they're actually pictures of Peter Jackson (without his beard) and Fran Walsh, Peter's partner and co-screenwriter.

GIF'S!!

Nothing intellectual in that chaos. Just another nightmarish epic concocted by the mind of Tolkien. Not at all to my liking. I had the same reaction to any and all of the Star Wars films- - - boring and way too long.

It definitely depends on the child. My daughter, 10, absolutely loved it. And she is very much like me, loves horror and suspense movies.

Twelve year old son dislikes horrors intensely, but loves fantasy and sci-fi. The second time we saw the movie he was able to associate what he was seeing to what we had read. And finally started grasping the themes.

The books and the movie take time to absorb. Not something to get on the first viewing or reading. Now that I have seen all of these additions to the movie, cannot wait to get it on DVD and study it.

My son noticed that Gandalf was riding a brown horse instead of a white one.
