I'm stunned that no one anywhere has mentioned the fact that when Frodo "comes to" in Rivendell, Gandalf tells him it's "October". Since October comes from the Gregorian calendar how could it exist in the Middle Earth time frame?

In the book Tolkien does use the same names for the months, although there calendar is slightly different. (All months have the same number of days, and there are special days that don't belong to any month in order for there to be the right number of days in the year.) I don't remember all the details about the calendar, but there is a section explaining it in the appendix.

Hmm. I never read the books. Isn't it odd that Tolkien created entire languages and gave such attention to minute details, but used a post-Gregorian calendar?
