NEW DELHI, India (January 13, 2002 12:39 p.m. EST) - Twelve people died and another 13 were wounded when armed militants surrounded a busy market in northeastern India and fired into the crowd Sunday in the biggest terrorist attack in the region in months, news reports said.
The attack in the Singicherra area of remote Tripura state was carried out by two groups of militants from the outlawed National Liberation Front of Tripura, the Press Trust of India news agency reported. The militants escaped, the news agency reported. The wounded were admitted to hospitals in the state capital of Agartala, and 10 were reported to be in serious condition.
Hundreds of police launched a search for the militants. The rebels are fighting to create a separate homeland for tribes in the region. Their insurgency is unrelated to separatist rebels in Kashmir and a Dec. 13 terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament - disputes between India and Pakistan that have recently brought the two countries to the brink of war.
The guerrillas operate out of Bangladesh, India's neighbor, and carry out hit-and-run strikes in Tripura. Tripura shares a 540-mile border with Bangladesh, a frontier that is guarded by India's Border Security Force.
Hm-m, wasn't Bangladesh a part of Pakistan before 1971? I wouldn't dismiss the connection so easily
If this sort of terror starts in the U.S. the Immigration Service will be working overtime sending all foreigners back home.
Yeah, and read an encyclopedia for "Bangladesh" (formerly "East Pakistan")
after all, they are the ones who refer to the kla as rebels when in reality [according to nato/eu/un] they are defined as terrorists!
Terrorism, use of violence, or the threat of violence, to create a climate of fear in a given population. Terrorist violence targets ethnic or religious groups, governments, political parties, corporations, and media enterprises. Organizations that engage in acts of terror are almost always small in size and limited in resources. Through the publicity and fear generated by their violence, they seek to effect political change on a local or international scale.

The National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) was formed in December 1989 under the leadership of Dhananjoy Reang, the former Vice-President of Tripura National Volunteers (TNV). Later, Nayanbasi Jamatia gained control over the organisation. In subsequent years, Viswamani Debbarma became the leader of the group. The main objective of the NLFT is to establish an "independent" Tripura through armed struggle.
The NLFT was banned in April 1997 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, following its involvement in terrorist and secessionist activities. During the current year, NLFT militants carried out a series of killings, abductions and attacks on security force personnel. Between January 1 and June 28, 2000, they killed 123 persons, including eight security force personnel and abducted 324 persons.
It has set up a number of camps in neighbouring Bangladesh's Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), in the Sylhet, Maulavi Bazar, Habiganj and Comilla areas. In March 1999, the Bangladesh Army busted two camps of NLFT and arrested 42 activists in the CHT. NLFT is the most active terrorist group in the State. It has a strength of about 800 cadres.
On the peace front, Mizoram Chief Minister, Zoramthanga, in April 2001, held a round of peace talks with the NLFT leadership in Aizwal on the request of the Chief Minister of Tripura. However, the NLFT has remained non-commital to a more comprehensive peace process.
The outfit, of late, faces the prospects of dis-integration along ethnic lines. News reports suggest that internal bickering within the NLFT and its political wing has led to a spate violent internecine clashes being reported from Tripura and the outfit's camps in the adjoining Bangladesh. Senior leaders such as Utpanna Tripura and Mukul Debbarma have been killed in this violence. Other senior leaders such as Joshua Debbarma and Nayanbashi Jamatia have been expelled as an outcome of differences with the chief, Biswamohan Debbarma and his clique. The first reports of internal difference within the outfit were published by Chaba, a publication of the Tripura People's Democratic Front, the political wing of a rival terrorist outfit - All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF).

it is ironic that america and nato forces an established republic in macedonia to sign agreements with known terrorists in the kla/nla!
that is why america needs to answer some questions in this war on terrorism!
let us not forget that american troops rescued these same terrorists last june in macedonia!
u.s. = double standards!
I LOVE it when people mindlessly prattle about stuff they know nothing about, not even bothering to do the slightest basic research.
The National Liberation Front of Tripura is CHRISTIAN, and is fighting to create a Christian state.

"The NLFT is larger and better armed. It says it is fighting not only for the removal of Bengali immigrants from the tribal areas, but also for the tribal areas of the state to become overtly Christian.
The NLFT has warned members of the tribal community that they may be attacked if they do not accept its Christian agenda."

"A highly placed police official said the BLF, fighting for independent homelands in Tripura and Mizoram, might have attacked the Christian missionaries out of anger. "The National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT), a tribal Christian militant group, was accused of threatening the Reangs to convert to Christianity and maybe the BLF wanted to retaliate," the official said."
