Killing someone, especially someone you know, isn't a pleasant thing to do, and I imagine the police officer understood that. But it was indeed heroic, and probably necessary. Since the man with the box-cutter was well known to both people, it would seem as if, once he decided to steal the guns, he would in the end have had to kill both witnesses to protect himself from arrest. Probably he was too drunk to think of that ahead of time, but not drunk enough to leave a pair of witnesses behind.

Indeed, taking a human life is the most unnatural, unsavory & ugly act that a sane human can commit. This is evident in the psychological trama suffered by Cops and citizens forced to take a life in defense of their own. But we, as sane human beings must remember who it is that we survive for, that's where such an unatural act becomes justified, especially against a sub-human like this creep.
