Outrage from New Hampshire!
Our friends at sister site PoliticsNH.com brought this offensive political cartoon to our attention. It was drawn by Mike Mariand and printed in today's Concord Monitor.
We don't have a problem with those who criticize President George W. Bush. In fact, we've taken a few shots at the Commander-in-Chief ourselves, when we thought he deserved rebuke. But to use the horrific September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Center that killed almost 3,000 innocent civilians to make a political point about the president's budget is disgusting. If Mariand were drawing cartoons in 1941, would he have drawn President Franklin Roosevelt piloting one of the Japanese fighter planes that participated in the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor to convey his opinion on an issue of the day?
If you would like to tell the folks at the Concord Monitor what you think about their political cartoon, we urge you to e-mail Mark Travis, the editorial page editor at mtravis@cmonitor.com. (2/8)

Dear Mr. Travis,
The last eight years of the Clinton Administration brought, what I thought at the time, a level of despicable values that would be unequaled for a long time to come. The horrific events of September showed us all that an unimaginable evil existed in this world of ours. I don't suppose anyone could have imagined the good that would flow from the worst attack on our way of life, our citizens and people of other countries. The heroism displayed on that day and ensuing ones was breathtaking to behold. The unity in this proud land has enabled America to begin a remarkable transformation from those dark days. Your editorial and the unmentionable cartoon which seems to bear the same message, has brought back all the fatal partisan, divisive, ruinous and vile tactics of division so reminiscent of the previous administration. You would take the greatest tragedy visited upon America since Pearl Harbor and attempt to trivialize it to make a political point. You make a mockery of the lives lost, of the heroic deeds, of the values of America itself. That ladies and gentlemen of the staff of your execrable paper, is as foul a deed as any criminal act brought to America on September 11. I can't begin to contemplate what it must be like to try and live without a conscience, as you have shown in this tasteless display of garbage.
Very truly yours,
To Whom It May Concern at the Concord Monitor:
We as a nation have been in mourning for the loss of humanity, and of innocence and security as well, since the morning of September 11, 2001. How DARE you use this for some assinine slam at the President? Frankly, I doubt you give a damn about whether or not the current plans to save Social Security work, but that's really beside the point. You disgust me, you can expect a large outcry of disgust over this obnoxious, self-serving display of really, pathetically poor taste, and I also intend to 1) cancel my husband's subscription to your nasty rag, and 2) contact every single one of your advertisers.
On a strictly personal note: You can go to hell.

(Should I have changed that to d@mn and h#ll for posting in FR? I know we have a no obscenity rule ... )
Thanks. That helped a lot. I was able to dig up some info on Mr. Marland with that name correction. Posting later...
Thanks for writing. Your NH address should be a little more interesting to the Concord Monitor than my NYC address.
Logic and Mr. Limbaugh Ray Perkins, Jr., cartoon illustrations by Mike Marland 200 pp., paper, $9.95, ISBN: 0-8126-9294-2, Open Court
This book is tagged as Current Affairs / Logic. It is designed to be a teaching text on logic, as we might expect from a professor of philosophy and critical thinking, but it will also engage the novice or casual reader. Perkins begins with introductory chapters on Basic Logic and How to Spot Fallaciesthen demonstrates the fine points with analysis of dozens of fallacies transcribed directly from radio scripts of Rush Limbaugh's shows. Perkins has found a rich vein; the examples are thorough, cogent, and lively. Rushs conservative commentary seems an endless fountain of suspect reasoning. The author does give credit when Rushs reasoning is sound, but the book will not be a winner with the millions of devoted readers of Limbaughs own mass market paperbacks, the dittoheads. In the words quoted on the cover of Martin Gardner, respected science author and commentator: Rush Limbaugh may be funny, entertaining, at times lovable, and even right, but his reasoning skills could hardly be more primitive
For liberals, independent thinkers, college students studying just about any social science not to mention logic proper, and sensible readers everywherethis will likely be the most entertaining and humorous book on clear thinking available this decade.Lourie
They have a little trouble with the concept of Truth, so it's not too surprising that they would go beyond the bounds of good taste, but ... well, mercy! This latest thing is just too much! Again, many thanks for posting it!
The stupid SOB'S who CREATED THIS PIECE OF FILTH, and that includes the editors who allowed it to go through, should have to go to some of the families whose lives will NEVER BE THE SAME, and explain what they thought was so "funny" about that comic. GRRRRRRRRRRRRR
.....Mr Marley.....
