"It's called free speech. If you don't like it move to a country where it's outlawed."

It's called free speech. We, the American public, are as free to exercise it as the idiot who drew the cartoon and the moron who published it. Get over it.

My rant over that bit of moral justification disguised as an apology:

The verbal gymnastics you engaged in, to justify the publication of Mike Marland's sick idea of intellectual humor, while attempting to give the appearance of making an apology to the citizens of this country are a miserable failure.

You said in your statement that "judgment is subjective, it can be wrong as well as right." In the case of all who were involved in making this mistake, judgment is simply absent. No number of excuses will change the fact that you are evil and heartless.

Later you said: "One reason Marland has been so good is that we allow him free expression." Good? Is the definition of "good" as subjective to you people as the definition of the word "is"? As an artist I find nothing "good" about that piece of work.

Finally, you say that "running the cartoon was a mistake because we live in the world of the Internet."

What?? It wasn't a mistake because it was a HATEFUL, HURTFUL, OFFENSIVE, MINDLESS, CHILDISH, TASTELESS, USELESS, THOUGHTLESS, CRASS AND HOPELESSLY OBTUSE?? In short, everything you people stand for in the minds of the average American. It was only a mistake, because the Internet made your almost criminally negligent lack of judgment known to millions of Americans?

You didn't even have the grace to use the word "president" in conjunction with the name of the president. I got news for you people: your "president" lost the election, and Clinton is nothing but a joke.

Again, you disgust us.

And just for fun, I also e.mailed the White House Press Office and asked for a statement.

White House Blasts Cartoon Over Sept. 11 Reference

Thank you seamole! I see that the NY Post ran a story on the subject in their Sat. morning edition, so it should be interesting to see how New Yorkers in particular respond.

I guess others do use that particular technique at times...but it most certainly is used by the left far more against the right than vice versa. Let me state a recent famous example..."George Bush not signing the hate crimes bill...was like my father being dragged all over again." For the Texas NAACP to compare Bush's non-support for a particular hate crimes bill to the dragging murder of a black man by three pieces of trash was a complete joke. So you may be right that the left doesnt enjoy 100% usage of that technique...but its certainly a pet tool they employ much more frequently than the right.

My message to the editor, sent this a.m.:
Dear Mr. Pride,

Online yesterday, I came upon Mr. Marland's political cartoon. My immediate reaction was: disgust and anger. Today, those feelings have only intensified.

This morning, I came upon your statement/apology concerning the cartoon. My reaction: while the apology places blame upon your decision to allow the cartoon to run, there is an undertone of placing blame on the individual (whoever that may be) who posted the cartoon on the internet, thereby allowing the community at large to read/see what's being printed in the Concord Monitor's newspaper. ("Even though Marland's cartoon was copyrighted, it was on the Internet by midday Friday.") While I appreciate your public apology, I sense a certain amount of deflection and finger-pointing by the previous statement, thereby making the apology something less than a full apology.

The cartoon is offensive for several reasons, some you have mentioned. What I perceive to be the greater offense: depicting President Bush as callously using our national tragedy for his personal gain and personal agenda: an ad hominem attack. There are great similarities between Mike Marland's "Social Security" cartoon and one drawn by Gary Trudeau in a Doonesberry cartoon and printed a couple months ago. These kinds of attacks were absent from the cartoonists while Clinton, an man of ill-repute and questionable character, was in office, which makes the attacks against our current President more odious and disgusting.

President Bush is an honorable man, who seeks to do good for our country. We may not all agree with his every decision, but he is motivated by and seeks to do, what he believes is best for our country. Something his predecessor never did.

I wonder how many emails Mr. Pride will continue to receive. I hope lots.

Has the Union Leader made any comment about this sad state of affairs? I may have missed it.

I just sent my e-mail.

The cartoon Mr. Mariand drew with the president flying toward the twin towers is certainly in line with the methods liberals use to display their dissatisfaction with republicans. In todays world, the entire country can view what is written or pictured in the smallest of small town newspapers. By now I assume you have received hundreds, or perhaps thousands of e-mails concerning the nations displeasure with this type of attempted humor. To many of us, there is no excuse to keep on the payroll, someone who exhibits this much hatred.

Here is what I sent...

For your sake, I hope Bush is Re-elected, and Re-elected again and again until your own demise. Not only is your cartoon in poor taste, but it is outright hateful... coming from the supposedly party of "Tolerance"... if only you could hear the sarcasm...

Well, if the cartoon is right, Bush will go down with it.

If SS is privatized, you wouldn't vote for Bush again? Take the cartoon figuratively not literally.

Done and done! One hotly worded letter to the editor sent. I'll send off notes to the advertisers later today.

Sickening.

The cartoon depicted a caricature of George Bush flying a toy plane toward the World Trade Center.

OMG! I can't believe what a mewly mouth puke this guy is! AAAAAAAAAARRRRRGH !

I suspect that he is the same type of wacko who would come down on a parent for allowing their kid to play with a "toy" gun.

Talk about trying to put a shine on a turd !

Yeah I LOVE that! I suppose that those were some TOY buildings filled with TOY people also. What a piece of sewage this guy is! I have never seen anything so stupid like this! No wonder the standard for the democrats is that of a jack@ss!

I wonder when the democrats are going to denounce this cartoon? I wonder when they are going to denounce the far left wing extremists in their own camp. They won't of course. But I still would like to see them get grilled on this issue by the national news.

This is the strip I was referring to in my email to the editor, as printed in newspapers on November 18, 2001:

I think it's just as disgusting as the cartoon of Bush crashing into the WTC.
