We did not have the heavy industrial set up that the north did, we were and still are for that matter an agro-economy and like most were run on credit from one crop to the next. There were no income taxes at that time on wages, our goods were taxed to the point that the only way money could be made in the south, was to ship it to England and France and then have the northers purchase it.
