Memorial to Mark WTC Anniversary-'Tribute of Light' to Shine Near Ground Zero

A now damaged sculpture called 'The Sphere,' which stood in the fountain of the trade center plaza will form one of the memorials.

That memorial will be inaguarated at a ceremony marking six months since the attack. It will take place in the park on Monday at 8:46 a.m. the time of day when on Sept. 11, the first of two hijacked jetliners slammed into one of the trade center towers.

A second memorial, consisting of two colums of light reminiscent of the destroyed twin towers, is to grace the city skyline beginning Monday night Mayor Bloomberg and Gov. Pataki said. The "Tribute of Light" was designed by Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda, both residents of lower Manhattan.

Keep it longer than 1 month, until work starts on Sept. 11 this year to rebuild the building or longer until it is rebuilt.

The lights should be the only source of light readily identifiable from space.

Is there some reason they can't say "Battery Park.?" I passed by the pre-hoopla hoopla this AM. News vans everywhere, podium and platform, etc. No one knew what it was for. Now we know.

I am really looking forward to seeing this. I could see the WTC everyday, and I am geniunely saddened everytime I noticed that it is gone.

I think this light tribute will be beautiful, graceful, and elegant.

It hasn't been hush-hush, it's been a minor controversy for a while now. The "Tribute of Light" has been a bone of contention for some people, if you can believe it. It was going to be called "Towers of Light" originally and that caused a flap with the hypersensitive knuckleheads who thought it was wrong to "honor architecture" rather than the people who died in the buildings. So they caved and changed the name.

Before next Monday I fully expect another group to object to the SHAPE of the "Tribute" as too tower-like, therefore honoring architecture at the expense of humans.

Interesting, why only a month for the memorial?

My guess is that the very idea of anything approaching a "permanent" memorial is highly offensive, for those who want to built Victimhood Park down there instead.

Would the lights be too much for the residents in the area?

They've also been battling the usual gaggle of enviro-idiots, who believe that the bright lights will entice migrating birds to plummet into them in suicidal death spirals.

I'm not kidding.

There are also environmental groups worried about migrating birds being driven off course by the beams (I never knew birds flew at night), and the FAA also can order it shut down if it proves distracting to pilots overhead.

And if you think all this is a tempest in a teapot, wait until anybody actually tries to BUILD anything down there.

I guess the memorial that should have been placed there - the actual three firefighters who raised the flag, is now just a memory.
