Tennessee's former governor, Lamar Alexander, yesterday became the second Republican to announce he will run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Sen. Fred Thompson.
"I know better than to try to replace Fred Thompson," said Mr. Alexander, who also served as U.S. education secretary and made two failed bids for the Republican presidential nomination. "But starting today, starting from scratch, I'm going to work as hard as I know how to persuade Tennesseans that I am the right person to succeed him."

This is a race that will divide the Republicans during the primary race. Howeverr, no matter who wins, we will need all Republicans to unite and make sure we hold this seat. We can not afford to let our pride stand in the way of keeping the liberals from digging in and gaining a stronger foothold in Congress.
LOL! That shirt is so 1994, I think even most Tennesseans would probably laugh if he wore it today.
Are you sure? I heard that, officially at least, Thompson was staying out of it.
Guys, Lamar Alexander and William Bennett were THE architects for the public education we pay so much for, and "enjoy" today. Another blown out ready to become a retread. Peace and love, George.
'nuff said.
There has been spirited discussion on Lamar Vs Bryant.
My vote goes to Bryant. Sorry Lamar, you have baggage which harold jr knows ALL about and will use. Jr is slick as a snake and has been GROOMED for political office, the higher the better. Last time he tried to run for a State wide office the rich dems wouldn't open their wallets according to one article on the subject.
The ford family is the laughing stock of Tennessee. They have their fingers in more crooked deals than you can shake a stick at. Currently daddy has his fingers in the TennCare till to the tune of $1.6M. He is facing ethic charges on it, tiny fine only $750.
