A walk in Havana
Boston Globe ^ | March 14, 2002 | Jeff Jacoby

HAVANA''THIS IS THE real Havana,'' Miguel said as we turned from Avenida Simon Bolivar to a gritty side street cratered with potholes. ''Here you see how Cubans live. Tourists don't come to this street.''

Well, they might if they were simply walking around, as I had been when Miguel came up to me a half-hour earlier. It was my first afternoon in Havana and I was taking advantage of some unexpected free time to explore the city. I had gotten no more than half a block from my hotel when a muscular black man in a bright orange sweater fell in beside me and asked, ''Hello, my friend, where are you from?''

Part of the allure of being a well-heeled Marxist liberal is the ability to travel to revolutionary places on your American passport and invite your friends to a slide show once you get back to your Manhattan apartment. The price of this extravagance is borne by the poor unfortunates who must live in this socialist zoo and who are beaten by the keepers once the visitors have gone back home for the night.

Thanks for the post. How interesting this came from a Boston paper.

Yep, sounds like a worker's paradise to me! Who in their right mind would want to leave such a place?

I just wish all the fools who still think Castro is some sort of hero- or merely just "cool to support"- could live a few years as ordinary citizens in "the Worker's Paradise...."

You mean like Jesse Jackson, for example?

Hundreds of accounts just like this one. No wonder people from around the world are clammering to become part of the Cuban experience. I await the calm waters of summer when those needy Americans take once again to rafts to take the dangerous trip accross the Florida straits.

This article is a primer for explaining why foaming-at-the-mouth socialists, such as Senator Clinton, embrace their ideology. Socialism grinds their opposition into dust so that they do not have do anything worthwhile or noteworthy. If they gain any position is the socialistic regime, they only have to be average at best to be perceived as successful.

Yes indeed. It is difficult to keep track of how many Americans have made that dangerous journey to that island paradise.

How many have there been now?

None?

Oh wait, can we include Elian in the count?

Bump! The "classless" are never without some sort of structure. And, of course, without property rights, there are no rights.

Finally! An article on Havana that actually tells it like it is! Usually, we're spoon-fed some pap from some left-wing congresscritter who gets led around the Potemkin Village by the nose. And all this coming from the Boston Glob. Will wonders never cease?

Well, he's one of many usual suspects- I can't even dredge up their names off the top of my head, but you know them- celebrities, politicians, glitterrati, who like to pretend that if they & their pals ran the World, all would be wonderful....

If the Democrats pass oall of the legislation that they want, then the USA will be exactly like this. Privilege and luxury for the government bureaucrats and grinding poverty for everyone else. (But all of us serfs will be EQUAL in our poverty, no more of the evil rich to work harder and damage the self-esteem of the indolent do nothing class - otherwise known as the Democratic core constituency.)

At the tourist hotels, they always serve you VERY big and generous portions of food. Want to guess why?

They serve more food than you can possibly eat because the waiters who clear the tables and those who clean the dishes save uneated food off the plate to feed their families...

This is just exactly the type of life style the American Elite Left envisions for us. No ownership of private property, crumbling apartments in the dirty big cities. Don't even think of owning an automobile. You can ride the mass transit out to the government park (or to your government specified drudge job) to see what green looks like because the stalinist environmental wackos will have achieved their dreams where the private property will be confiscated. Of course, they will get to have vacation homes because they will need a place to retreat to to recharge their batteries so they can go on looking out for our interests. It will all be fair then. It was the same way in the CCCP, and undoubtedly is in China, North Korea and other communist paradises.

And once Senator Clinton and her ilk get the power, they won't need a lot of those pesky people who helped put them there. You know, the africanhyphenamericans (except for window dressing elites like Jesse, and servants), the nativehyphenamericans, the homosexuals, etc. When the Bolsheviks finally consolidated power in the CCCP, they dug a lot of holes and filled them up with the bullet riddled bodies of the mensheviks and others who helped them get the power.
