'The United Methodist Church General Board of Church and Society has been asked to clarify the relationship between GBCS and the fund to pay for legal representation by Gregory Craig, the attorney representing Mr. Juan Miguel Gonzalez, father of Elian Gonzalez.

The executive committee of The General Board of Church and Society agreed to establish a fund to receive voluntary contributions to pay the costs of ensuring that Juan Miguel Gonzalez is fairly represented in the U.S. Courts. This decision followed a request by the Cuban Council of Churches (of which The Methodist Church of Cuba is a member) to assist in securing legal counsel for Juan Miguel Gonzalez for equal representation under the law in the U.S. Courts.'
