Harare - A white farmer was shot and killed near his homestead early on Monday, apparently while trying to escape an attack by settlers and war veterans, said a farm community spokesperson. Jenni Williams of the Commercial Farmers' Union said Terry Ford of Gowrie farm, about 40km southwest of Harare, was found shot through the head. He was the tenth white farmer to be killed since President Robert Mugabe's supporters began the seizure of white-owned commercial farms, two years ago.

Mugabe won a fifth term as Zimbabwe's leader last week, but the opposition claim that he stole the election.

Williams said Ford, who was alone on his farm, called for help early on Monday, saying he was being threatened by farm settlers and veterans of the liberation war. "At 06:00, his domestic worker reported for duty and found his body lying next to a tree outside the house. There is evidence Mr Ford was trying to drive out of the farm," she said.

Yep, I got your meaning allright. Forgive my pickiness. You're absolutely right that this is never mentioned by the press. The one veteran of that war who stays visible online in columns, and such is Michael Pierce. I'm 49 and I think he has 5 or six years on me. The veterans of that war would all be middle aged or nearly so.

One thing that occurs to me is that the communist war veterans are probably not even in Zimbabwe for the most part. From what I read, many were from other parts of the continent anyway and went home after the war. Of course there were European communists involved as well. That was a joint effort for commie "independence forces". That's a hoot, ain't it? Independence my butt. All of those "newly independent" African countries went from being productive colonies to being penniless leeches on the UN and other countries. They're all about as independent as Tipper Gore.
