But what if one or two got together and agreed we needed to be cut off? Take Venezuela for an example. Their oil company is state controlled. This is not a stable source at the moment. We need to stay powerful enough to take it if we need it or have our own supply to drawn on so we don't have to kow-tow to and/or support oppressive governments.

Even now Venezuela needs America as a market more than we need them. With some development in Russia, South Asia,Columbia and Africa plus some other sources we will have even more leverage. OPEC can't keep its current members in line and with more sources it will be almost impossible for any source to blackmail the U.S.
