NABLUS, West Bank (AP)--

The Palestinian suicide bomber who carried out Thursday's deadly blast in Jerusalem had been jailed for attempting to carry out an earlier attack. But the Palestinians released him last week

when Israeli troops entered the West Bank city where he was being held.

Mohammed Hashaika, 22, a former policeman, detonated his explosives on a busy shopping street in west Jerusalem, killing himself and two other people, and wounding about 60 on Thursday afternoon. Hashaika belonged to the Al Aqsa Brigades, a militia linked to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement.

Palestinian authorities arrested Hashaika two months ago after receiving information from Israeli intelligence sources that he was planning an attack, according to a member of the Al Aqsa Brigades, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Israeli security sources said Hashaika was among dozens of suspected militants Israel had asked the Palestinian Authority to arrest.

Hashaika, a Palestinian policeman who was fired after his arrest, was picked up in the West Bank town of Tulkarem, and had an explosives belt, the Al Aqsa member said.

Hashaika was later taken to a West Bank prison in Ramallah, but the Palestinians freed him last week, fearing that Israel was preparing another round of air strikes against Palestinian security facilities. On several occasions, the Palestinians have freed prisoners, saying they cannot ensure their safety when the Israeli planes and helicopters bomb.

The Israelis sent tanks and troops into Ramallah for several days last week, but did not carry out air strikes on this occasion.

Although the Al Aqsa Brigades is tied to Arafat's Fatah movement, group members claim they carry out attacks on their own - even when they are at odds with Arafat's official policy.

Thursday's bombing was condemned by Arafat and also forced the cancellation of scheduled truce talks. But a spokesman for the Al Aqsa Brigades, using the name Abu Mujahed, said the group was still carrying out attacks because no cease-fire had been reached.

"Arafat did not give any orders (to halt attacks), there is no cease-fire declaration yet," Abu Mujahed said. He said his group would be willing to observe a formal truce, "but the Israelis continue their aggression and assassinations and we will continue our attacks."

Asked if Arafat was in charge of the Al Aqsa Brigades, Abu Mujahed said: "The Al Aqsa Brigades is a popular movement established by the people, and gets its power from the people. The people want to resist."

Although they carry out attacks on their own, they won't stop them because Arafat didn't tell them to.

Good find, I_publius. Couldn't help but think that, most likely, this is hosted on an American website, resides on Sun servers, transmitted to you and me via American satellites --- all of which exists due to American freedoms and ingenuity in the first place.

Just like the communists, these people see no shame in partaking and enjoying precisely that which they claim to hate.

You are probably thinking, what's new? The ability of speaking from both sides of the mouth is considered wisdom in that part of the world. Arab's honesty --- something more rare than a virgin in ancient Egypt.

The terrorist was from the Al Aksa Martyrs Brigades,

THAT'S ARAFAT'S ORGANIZATION

Why would ANYONE be surprised if Arafat lets his own prisoners out to serve as his own suicide bombers

Looks to me like their guestbook is in need of some serious Freeping...

O.K. Here's my contribution:

Says Kamel:

>"JERUSALEM IS OURS, AL-MASJID ALAKSA IS OURS,BEIT LAHIM IS OURS,....", i don't want to name each city, so 'PALESTINE IS OURS".<

Sorry, too late.

The Arabs, were they not consumed with unreasoning, unremitting Jew-hatred, could have had a Palestinian State including ALL of Jerusalem by simply accepting the U.N.'s partition of the remaining territory of the British Mandate back in 1948. The Jews, despite the desire of their hearts nurtured through hundreds of years in exile, were willing to accept the partition, and made NO CLAIM on Jerusalem when they declared their state.

The Arabs chose war (repeatedly) instead of peace, and attacked Israel intending its utter destruction. For the sin of their hatred and injustice Allah took Jerusalem from them and returned it to their brothers the Jews. Although they have shown in the Camp David proffer the almost unaccountable generosity of being willing to partition Jerusalem between themselves and the Palestinians, the Jews will never again give up their rightful claim to the City of David.

Even today any demonstration of true civility and willingness to live in peace on the part of the Palestinians would lead to the creation of a Palestinian State, including East Jerusalem as its capital, as surely as day follows night. A just and peaceful resolution of their claims is available to the Palestinian people at any time.

A Palestinian State to exist IN PEACE alongside Israel is the policy of the United States, and of virtually (if not literally) every political entity in the Western World. It is the desire of the vast majority of Americans (including myself) to see this realized. The eventual creation of a Palestinian State as the only just and stabile resolution of the Palestine question is also accepted by the vast majority in Israel, and is even accepted and has been so stated by Sharon himself. The world is waiting only for the Palestinian people and the Arab people and their leaders to make this possible, for it is ONLY in the Arab world that this just peace is opposed by a majority of the people and by their leaders.

In short the Palestinians fight not because they have to, but because they CHOOSE to. To choose war and create strife when a just and peaceful resolution is available is EVIL. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs and the current Intifida are great EVILS. The martyrs do not serve Allah; they serve Satan. They will not have 72 virgins in Paradise, but will be attended by 7200 demons in Hell.

But that is a matter for God. As for this world, let me tell you this: As the great world power (for the present) the United States understands and accepts its inevitable responsibility to do what can be done to promote world peace, prosperity and justice. That you may denounce its efforts to realize this responsibility as arrogant will not cause it to shirk this duty. (That can only result from the selfish and self-absorbed distraction of the American people, and the American people now know the cost of that.) America watches your ACTIONS. We are not misled by your lies. We know your lies even when you do not, for we do not share your hate-fueled delusions. While you blame all the world but yourselves for the conditions your hatred has created, we see only your murderous thuggery. It will not prevail.

I wish you well. The great majority of Americans wish peace and justice for the Palestinian people. We also wish you the great good of self-determination and self-governance. But you will never be allowed to achieve this by killing your brother. That will not stand.

Just goes to show once more that AraRAT and his terrorists are nothing more than murderers operating under the disguise of freedom for the palestinians. What does it take for the world to understand this?

The simple fact is that Palestinians will not make peace with Israel. The Clinton administration made Israel give too much and now the terrorists want it all.

The simple fact is that Israel and the Israelis have no safe harbor and must defend themselves.

The simple fact is that some arab states are oil-rich and have lots of room and the need for workers. The Palestinian refugees need a home. In Jordan. In Arabia. In Syria. In Lebanon.

The simple fact is that there will be no peace until Israel elects it's own George W. Bush and he will find the terrorists and bring them to justice.......whatever it costs.

The simple fact is that it's the arab states that are soft and lazy and Israel needs to act decisively now. Actually, after the 1973 war, all non Jews should have been deported and assimilated in the neighboring arab states and the region and the world would be much more peaceful now!!!!

I was going to write a message in the guestbook but saw that everything had been said already. I was of 'two minds' when I was reading the entries. My right-sided brain was telling me to set down lot of profanity and insults. My left-sided brain was telling to set down a logical and reasonable response.

However, neither approach is worthwhile.

My Freeper brain tells me we ought to lure some hackers to the site and crash it! Just wanted you all to know.

When Arafat wanted a ticket to the Arab Conference he found the power to arrest Ze'evi's killers.

When he has the incentive he finds the power.

From DEBKA

Just five days ago, Arafat told the Americans and Israelis that his security forces had arrested a potential suicide bomber, Mohammed Hashaika, in the village of Taluza near the West Bank town of Nablus. Arafat, out to prove to the Americans he was serious about fighting terror, asked them to press Israel for permission to transfer the terrorist from Nablus to Ramallah so that his security forces could keep a closer eye on him.

Israel assented – but the young Palestinian didn’t spend a single hour in Ramallah prison. Instead, he was taken straight to the headquarters of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades – a force belonging to Arafat’s Fatah faction – where officers loyal to Colonel Tawfik Tirawi, chief of the Preventive Security agency and the Palestinian intelligence officer closest to Arafat, handed him an explosives belt. After showing Hashaika how to use it, they sent him on his way to downtown Jerusalem to carry out the attack.

The bombing marked the first time in his 40 years of waging terrorism that Arafat has been caught red-handed. He personally arranged for the transfer of the suicide terrorist to Ramallah – and he knew exactly what for
