WASHINGTON (AP) -
Islamic groups say they are outraged that federal agents were sent to search their homes and business looking for evidence of terrorist activity.
"The Muslim community is deeply concerned about what appears to be a fishing expedition by federal authorities using McCarthy-like tactics in a search for evidence of wrongdoing that does not exist," Jason Erb, of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said Thursday.
The searches Wednesday by 150 law enforcers from several federal agencies were part of an effort coordinated by the Treasury Department to cut terrorists off from their funding. The Customs Service said 14 search warrants were executed in northern Virginia and one was used in Georgia, but no arrests were made.
One woman whose Herndon, Va., home was raided described men breaking through her door, pointing a gun at her 19-year-old daughter as she tried to call 911 and handcuffing them for three hours.
"My daughter and I are citizens of good standing," Aysha Unus said. "We feel the system has humiliated us."
Laura Jaghlit, a high school English teacher from Fairfax Station, Va., described the raid on her home as "the most un-American thing I have ever seen."
Officials rifled through photos of her children, threw the contents of her drawers on the bed and took her family's computer, credit cards, passports and bank account information, Jaghlit said.
Customs would not provide information on which homes and businesses were searched, saying that affidavits filed in support of the search warrants were under seal in federal court.
"The search warrants executed yesterday by Operation Green Quest were approved by a federal magistrate who found that there was probable cause to conduct these searches," said Dean Boyd, a spokesman for the agency.
The Muslim groups said they opposed terrorism and accused the Bush administration of unfairly targeting their community.
Did he say all that in one breath? I'm impressed.
Tough $#!t.
I'm reading American Jihad right now. CAIR (the group that strenuously objected to these searches) is following the pattern set after the first WTC bombing in '93. That is, give a tepid condemnation of the horrific act its people have committed, then spend the rest of its energy "urging restraint" by the government in going after the perps.
It's essentially a front group for Hamas. Don't like it, rags? Hit the road. I'm sure the Saudi government has much greater tolerance. What's their version of the Fourth Amendment, I wonder? Chop off hands only after due process?
Psychics, maybe. Psychos, certainly.
Now, if it turns out they really are in good standing and not up to something, then this case will became yet another good example of why profiling is a bad idea. This, of course, will lead to all of us being less safe because the limited resources can't be focused on those people or groups that fit the profile.
I didn't know the BATF was in on this operation.
They purposely pick a non-accented Islamic white woman in chadol headcover to do their talking and emotional soundbites for CNN, to press the subliminal point that 'we are just like you.' [I WANT TO SEE THE PHOTOS OF FELLOW AMERICANS JUMPING TO THEIR DEATHS IN NYC JUST SEVEN SHORT MONTHS AGO.]
What they stand for, though, is unAmericanism and unreasonably good treatment of TERRORISTS in Guantanamo who actually deserve the opposite.
"fishing expedition"
"McCarthy-like tactics"
Seems like I have seen these buzz words before - wonder if the DNC is writing their stuff.
Boy, the CAIR really uses the lingo of the Left to inflame the Marxist passions in our media well. No surprise then, that they always get carte blanche when it comes to being labelled as "de-facto" spokesmen for arabs in America, when interviewed for a given story. Kinda makes one wonder how well they really do represent arabs, compared to what the reality is... Leftist groups are notorious for stretching facts to fit their agenda, after all. For example, isn't CAIR the group which insists that there are over 6 million muslims here? Wonder how accurate that number is.
The relationship between our media, and marxist activist groups, continues on unchecked. All of us out here in REAL America (Ok, so I live too close to DC to be considered in this group, but after living in NW Florida for so long, still consider myself in the "us" :) ) are well aware of the Marxist bias of our media, yet the idiots on TV still can't figure out that it's there...
:) ttt
He also advocates requiring certain men younger than 45 who aren't U.S. citizens to leave the country until the war on terrorism ends. Greenfield would include men from countries such as Iraq, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan and who aren't married to U.S. citizens and who have been in the United States less than 10 years.
"Mainstream politicians will say these are radical ideas," said Greenfield, 54, of Tualatin. "But voters will say that makes a lot of sense."
I remember reading somewhere ("Venona", I think) that according to post-Cold War papers released by the Soviet intelligence service, McCarthy was very much wrong when he said there were 100 Communists and Communist sympathizers in the State Dept. There were actually over 900 in the State Dept world-wide.
This, according to Soviet formerly classified papers. If the Soviets were right it would seem that McCarthy knew what he was talking about but was lynched by the media of the day.
