At last week's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender town meeting, plans for a course of study that deals with sexuality and gender issues were discussed. With many leading academic institutions already offering programs of study in this discipline, Penn State should turn these plans into a reality.
According to the details of the proposed minor outlined by Vince Lankewish at Thursday's meeting, the implication of a program in LGBT studies would use -- for the time being at least -- classes and courses that already exist.
By offering this proposed minor, the university would put itself in a class with a small, but growing, number of respectable institutions that offer programs of study dealing with LGBT issues. Schools such as Duke, Cornell, UCLA, and UC-Berkeley all offer, at the least, certificate programs or concentrations in programs centering on gender and sexuality studies. Queer theory, which is the formal name for the academic movement, is growing in popularity across the country.
But, in addition to showing a commitment to staying at the forefront of new academic fields, Penn State also can demonstrate an even greater commitment to diversity. As Lankewich said at the town meeting, approving the minor as a legitimate course of study within the university could help the success of LGBT activism on campus. At the least, having the minor will show that the university recognizes the importance of promoting awareness of diversity issues.
Implementing the minor is only half the battle in raising awareness and encouraging activism. The students who pursue the LGBT minor will, most likely, be the students who already have an interest in gender and sexuality issues.
However, just having the LGBT program as a choice is a step in the right direction. It shows that the university is not afraid to support the study of nontraditional, cutting-edge academic programs dealing with diversity issues. It also will eventually offer, as the program grows, enough to have its own courses, additional options and expanded choices to fulfill students' diversity requirements.
We encourage the university to add an LGBT minor to the curriculum.
But have no doubts, this proposed "academic" minor course of "study" is as good as enacted. Now that it has been embraced by the Penn State homosexual activists, it is virtually a given that the spineless PSU administration will cave to the demand, and further diminish the academic integrity of this once great university.
Queer theory, which is the formal name for the academic movement, is growing in popularity across the country.
If you are one of the many hundreds of thousands of Penn State alumni looking to donate your money, I suggest that you contact the Penn State Alumni Relations Department and make your opinion known.
Meanwhile, pardon me while I barf.
Done.
Jethro, what's the "buzz" up at State College?
to be fair to the kids here, i really don't see too much of this fringe
element, but not too much ever diffuses to the c.o.b. at any school
i would suspect.
bottom line: screw graham (sp) spanier. he caved big time with his
race relations, so the gay (the other diversity) crowd mines for gold too!
If you are as fed up with it as I am, and want to see a return to an emphasis on traditional learning and academics, tell the administrators of PSU that you won't donate until they put their house in order. Money talks, and the PSU administration is ruled by money as much as they are by political correctness.

As far as donating money - the only checks I write are to the athletic department and my fraternity's social fund. At least there I know where the money is being spent - football and beer, just the way it should be!
And that is a great source of frustration to the small minority of activists on the fringe, and some in the administration. It is encouraging to me to see that the overwhelming majority of students here who I come into contact with daily, a not inconsiderable number, are normal kids.
The Young Americans for Freedom especially are a terrific example of bright, educated, and motivated students, as are the College Republicans. During the past school year they have brought speakers to campus including David Horowitz, Ben Stein, Alan Kors (co-author of the Shadow University), and a couple of other top notch conservative speakers.
Many of these students recently attended CPAC in Washington DC, and several are doing internships in DC this summer with organizations connected to Hillary's VRWC.
So the news at PSU is not all bad.
i wish that every time one of these wacko groups pipes up with something
like this, the normal rank and file could do something like point to
joe pa and his unwavering support of W before (and during) the election,
or just ride a bus around campus.
She and her friends despise Graham Spanier. He's done his best to inject liberalism into PSU's still mostly conservative student body. IMHO, it's a losing proposition for Spanier. The vast majority of PSU kids come from decent, hard working families. Their values can't be punctured by washed up leftists like him.
My daughter and her circle of friends spent last month firing off resumes and their working future looks solid. They have no time for the hags from Women studies or the quiffs from the "gay" crowd.
Can you say:
"Do you want fryth thwith that?"
During my time at State College (1996-2000) I think it's safe to say I saw more people utterly disgusted by these folks than persuaded by them. If anything, organizations such as these turn folks away from their cause.
IMHO, Zack Mills is one of the best young QB's in the nation. Him, along with a returning OL, and Larry Johnson at TB, should start us off on the right foot.
I see 8, possibly 9 wins this year.
