The operator illuminates a target with a laser designator and then the munition guides to a spot of laser energy reflected from the target.

OK, so who volunteers to stick around and illuminate the target until the nuke hits it?

The underlying importance of this article, though it be filled with faulty assumptions, is that it recognizes nukes as a legitimate option.

"Keep the enemies guessing!"

May not be any guess to it. I would not be at all surprised if the first blow was a nuke on Iraq's command & control, WMD research center and/or Saddam's bunker.

This would be in accord with our stated national policy that we would be prepared to respond to any chemical or bio-attack with nuclear weapons. It is becoming increasingly clear that the anthrax came from Iraq. And that Iraq may have been waging a surreptitious war against us for as much as a decade.

Ya mean they're still fighting the Gulf War? Nahhh. We won that one fair and square...

We have hundreds of thousands of tons of chemical weapons going to waste when they could be exterminating the ratholes of terrorists and their defenders. Screw UN treaties and Amnesty Intercommunist, I say give a soaking dose of Arab "Raid".

What a stupid article. Nukes could take out most of the worlds bunkers. Only places built like Colorado Springs could survive direct nuclear arms.

Now wait a minute... The article was clearly discussing how effective nuclear weapons would be in Iraq *given certain constraints* which are likely to be the case.

Sure, you can crack just about anything by repeated application of 50 megaton H-bombs... But the side-effects are going to be a bitch (like giving most of Turkey radiation sickness).

The point of the article is that if we *did* use nukes as bunker-busters in Iraq, they'd have to be smallish ones, and they'd have to be applied deep enough underground to minimize long-range fallout. Given the reality of our situation there (we're interested in keeping civilian casualties to a minimum), that's understandable.

"Hey, Abdul, could you hold this for a minute? I'll be right back."
