Hardly simple-minded! I've designed user interfaces for over 25 years, and had them extensively reviewed by teams of professionals.

Personally I had considered the Free Republic interface and layout of last week one of the BEST examples of great user interfaces I've ever seen. Simple, effective.

Now? This current offering is all "me-too, me-too", too many graphics (grpahics -- unless they are charts -- should be able to be flagged out btw).

If there is any change I would like in FR, it would have been for personal configuration of the HTML filter. On my cell-phone hookup I would like to be able to turn off any < img > and even limit the font changes.

Not lazy, just want to see my news, my comments and all without having to wait 30 minutes. A new person accessing this site will not be able to see what a wonderful place it is. Many people are not computer whizzes - they are doing good to get on the computer.

I can't imagine a new person coming on here and being able to see breaking news, or anything that would encourage them to return. They will not be able to customize their screen, subscribe to "breaking news" - they will just leave.
