Provide separate settings for: 1. Number of thread TITLES per page, and 2. Number of COMMENTS visible when a thread is opened.
I like to have about 50 TITLES per page, and I just refresh the page to see what the hot topics of discussion are. But, when I wade into a discussion thread, I like to have about 250 comments on that web page.
