Israeli Tanks Enter Bethlehem, Say Witnesses, Stopping 500 Yards From Birthplace of Jesus

BETHLEHEM, West Bank March 31

Israeli tanks entered Bethlehem early Monday, stopping 500 yards from the Church of the Nativity, which marks the traditional birthplace of Jesus, witnesses said.

Earlier, dozens of Israeli tanks rolled into the West Bank town of Qalqiliya, marking a widening of the Israeli operation that began Friday when Israeli forces broke into the compound around Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's office in the West Bank town of Ramallah and took up positions just outside his office. Other tanks took control of the town.

The Israeli military refused to comment about the Bethlehem incursion. Tanks and armored vehicles were seen approaching Bethlehem overnight. The invasion began at 5:30 a.m., shortly before daybreak.

The moves into the two towns came after a speech by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to his nation, in which he pledged, "We will clean out the terrorist infrastructure from the foundations." He spoke after two Palestinian suicide bombers struck, killing 15 Israelis.

On Friday, a woman bomber from the Bethlehem area blew herself up at a Jerusalem supermarket, killing two Israelis.

The Israeli military refused to comment about the Bethlehem incursion.

Because they're tired of getting screwed over by the international press and the U.S. State Department.

. . . Bethlehem incursion . . .

Not a bad choice of words at all! Implications not much more inflammatory than "tour" or "visit" . . . not quite as exciting as "insertion".

"Incursion" is frequently used with "accidental" when speaking of violations of air space.

AP is good and balanced.

Hopefully this will be the begining of the end for Arafat and the PA.

What, then, about the very next sentence?

The invasion began at 5:30 a.m.

AP balanced? In a pig's eye they are!

the U.S. State Department.

Sorry, but maybe I need some clarification as to how exactly the United States or the US state department is "screwing" anyone.

Whenever Israel responds militarily to PA terrorism, the State Department is right there to condemn their actions and bitch that they're not doing enough to find a diplomatic solution. In doing so, we wind up looking like hypocrites because we are fighting a war against terrorism while condemning Israel for doing the same thing.

Israel is doing the right thing, I'm glad that the Bush Administration has finally figured that out!

Israel should do what they have to do...kick the Pali's out of the Gasa and the West Bank; assert their legal God-given claim to the land, which He has given to them as an inheritance!

God doesn't give a twit about world public opinion, neither do I, nor should Israel!

I agree to be honest with you, just kinda wondered what you meant.

Israel is doing the right thing, I'm glad that the Bush Administration has finally figured that out!

I agree again 110% on both parts.

The reports coming in from Israel are that the roads are "Choked" with military traffic..and staging areas.
Hundreds of Tanks and armored personel carriers.
IDF are rolling out "Zeldas" with "Vulcan gattling " guns..other units are armed optical missile systems.

I have'nt seen the IDF deploy this type of hardware since 82 when they went in and smashed Hizbullah and the PLO in Lebanon.

Some foolish terrorist will expose himself..fire a burst or to from his AK-47....Seconds later...a thousand rounds of 30mm errupt toward him.
Hizbullah faced this in Lebanon...those that lived from the first contact with these "Gattling gun" Zeldas ran for their lives.
Olympic sprint records were broken that day!

I am all for this operation. But please...Sharon...easy with the tanks on the holy sites. Remember folks terrorists might be living among the innocent there but this is the birthplace of Christ. They must preserve these sites as well.

"We will clean out the terrorist infrastructure from the foundations."

America's War on Terrorism is seamlessly joined with Israel's.

It just takes some really slow people a long time to see it.

Colin Powell, Joe Lieberman, Shimon Peres, and a host of others.

90%+ of the media will refuse to see it.

Daniel Pearl, Robert Fisk, Geraldo Rivera, et cetera.

Hopefully, the IDF can handle it without damaging the churches. In 1967, they were careful, in spite of a full scale war.

all holy sites were made redundant in ad33,it will do the Christian church good to have a few knocked down they've signed deals and supported Arafat and muslims, perhaps the loss of income- the only thing that registers with them will cause some needed introspection, there's plenty spare 27000 out of the 30000 christians have left under Arafat
