Pretty obvious especially during a time not that long ago (about 20 years) when venereal disease (VD) was the common term and venery a loaded term implying excessive indulgence in sexual pleasure.

Well, I'm 25, and I can remember the term veneral disease being used as the most common term. If I'm not mistaken, the change in wordage occurred from 1985-1990.
