I would also recommend reading "In a Dark Wood" (i'll have to go dig up the book for the author's name) about the spotted owl debacle in the northwest. Very eye-opening. Also a good discussion in about "Deep Ecology". It's bee a long time since I read the book, so can't go into any detail, but I think it's timely for me to read it again.
