[history]
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon vowed to continue fighting "until the job is done" after visiting with Israeli troops on the eve of U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell's arrival in the strife-ridden region Thursday.
From the tone of the media reportage, and reaction from various capitals, it looks like Operation Bamboozle is working like a charm -- or better.

Thanks, John, for the ping and the editorial.
I'm hoping what you write is true, but I'm very nervous about the Powell mission.
You are saying the confusion the Powell trip is generating is deliberate, with clear goals in mind despite all the naysayers.
I pray you are right, but these are terrifying days.........

To paraphrase the General... Even my wife understands that what Isreal is doing is precisely the same as what we (the US) are doing; conducting a war on terrorism. Why should they have to stop defending themselves? Appeasing some French Intellectuals is not a good reason.

And that's the lesson of Operation Bamboozle: It teaches Arafat et al that two can play at this game. WHACK!!! and its a long drive to deep center field,, back, back, back,, it's outta here!!!!! HOME RUN !!!!
What a call,,, this truly answers all the monday morning quarterbacks questioning President Bush's actions as of late regarding Israel's pullout,,,
God Bless President Bush and America

"When the bombs start to drop over Baghdad, Israel will have Arafat by the jugular."
An excellent and reassuring read first thing in the morning. I always knew deep down that Bush would do the right thing by Israel while at the same time furthering American interests. Saddam, Yasser, bin Laden inside of one year...Bush is going to hit the trifecta.

I hope you are right, you do have a good track record and I trust GW do do the right thing.

If Irael will not or can not protect herself, who will? The EU or the UN or the arab league? In the end, it all boils down to the fact that a country must and should defend itself. If they don't or can't, then they should have to face the consequences.Israel is doing what the US decided to do after 9/11...defend herself. That required taking offensive measures. Go for it Israel. GREAT ESSAY,

Molly, these are indeed fearsome days.... JH2 writes:
Bush hasn't been diverted from the principal focus of his mission: Preventing a nuclear 9-11 attack
That is what I have been expecting all along since 911, and have hinted at obliquely by my posts of links about NBC warfare and terrorism.

Let me remind everyone that Colin Powell was the one who got the Haitian general to leave for exile. I believe what we see in public press conferences is not quite how Powell speaks behind closed doors.

Bump! for a great editiorial. Part of the problem is that, as Americans, we're accustomed to, and desirous of, a "straight shooter", with little guile. In the politics of the Middle East, being a straight shooter is probably the worst thing you can be, and using diplomatic guile and cunning in this manner goes against the grain of most Americans. Nevertheless, it's probably the right approach.
Let's just hope that this is what's really happening.

As always, JH2, excellent commentary

Thank you for putting into words so clearly what is proceeding between the White House and the Middle East. President Bush always thinks a few steps ahead of our media whiners. Dealing with people who do not value honor and truth is tricky at all times.

I really enjoyed this editorial. Things are never quite as they seem.

Interesting. We'll see. <><

"All warfare is based on deception", so said Sun Tzu, the wise Chinese General millennia ago. Shudder to think if the Clinton administration could have followed that adage.
To: JohnHuang2
This is Bush's policy, not Powell's, not Cheney's, nor Rice's, not Rumsfeld's, not Sam Donaldson's -- but Bush's: Win, lose or draw, in the end, the buck stops with Bush. End of story. In the end the finesse needs to be clear, the Bush Doctrine is the only way to maintain peace and moral authority.
To: JohnHuang2
lol...this has to be the slowest trip to a country in modern day history. In the jet age, it takes over a week to get there! I've heard the term "slow boat to China", but never "take the slow plane to Israel"!
To: JohnHuang2
Good thing we have John Huang2 to translate what Bush is doing
I don't pay any attention to Bush's speeches or Ari's press conferences or Rumsfields briefings etc etc I come right here to find out the REAL story. Saves me a lot of time
