THE Bush administration plans to delete President Clinton's signature from the treaty setting up the International Criminal Court, which it believes could lead to show trials of US servicemen.
"We will take the steps that we believe are necessary to ensure that we are divorced from this process," said Pierre-Richard Prosper, US ambassador at large for war crimes.
Mr Clinton had big doubts about the treaty, but signed it three weeks before he left office. The move was derided as an empty gesture because the Senate, which would have to ratify the treaty for it to become US law, was implacably opposed to it.
President Bush intends to "unsign" it, effectively nullifying Mr Clinton's signature and ensuring that the Senate could not bring it into force.
In January, Mr Bush signed a law forbidding Pentagon funds being used "to co-operate" with the ICC. Members of the House of Representatives are drafting legislation that could restrict military aid to non-Nato countries participating in the court.
The ICC's critics say Colin Powell, the US secretary of state, or his successors could be arrested in future over current foreign policy.

Thank goodness. Thanks Dubya.

This is great news, but does anybody know how they're going to do it? I read today that it's not possible to remove it, and that what will happen is simply that the Senate will not vote on it. It has no effect unless ratified by the Senate. However, it would be nice if they could sort of undo it altogether
BTW,it was one of Bill's last-day-in-office things; he was sure one busy man that day!

Awesome. Now do you suppose our fine President can figure a way to undo a few thousand other things Clinton did?
To: Pokey78
Can he DO that???
(Reminds me of the old Larson cartoon, settlers in in a wagon circle,"They're lighting their arrows! Can they DO that???")

Tell that to the jackasses who elected clinton president TWICE and continue to sing his praises. Too bad his name couldn't have been deleted from the ballot.
