In the weeks following last month's primary election, labor unions pumped more than $675,000 into Gov. Gray Davis' re-election effort, padding his huge lead over Republican businessman Bill Simon in the all-important contest for campaign cash.

Since March 5, state records show that Davis has collected more than $1.5 million in contributions of $5,000 or more. By contrast, Simon has raised about $800,000 in large donations during the same period.

"Extortion works" -- Until the 'light of truth' is seen.

The $$$$ Davis has have been taken from the 'Union Workers', and, if government employees, from the taxpayers of California. Deficit Davis does not deserve a 2nd term, and his minions are proposing new taxes(on soft drinks and bullets) to try and COVER for the energy debacle and the budget shortfall, IMHO.

Perata's tax on bullets has NOTHING to do with the deficit. It's just an excuse.

"The governor appeals to groups on all sides, whether it's business or labor," Salazar said. "People like the way he's headed on a lot of issues."

The 'Wrongicle Chronicle', again.

Gray, being neither 'black or white', while not colorless, is shady. 'The way he's headed on a lot of issues' IS 'down the tubes', and I am NOT one of the 'people' who like the way he's headed.

"It's just an excuse."

Every 'central government' revenue 'enhancer' needs an excuse, usually it's a 'bait and switch', like the liquor and tobacco taxes. I agree with you. Anyone that calls a tax an 'investment in tomorrow' is thinking only of THEIR OWN tomorrow.
