Powell, Sharon Discuss Mideast Conference Idea

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Secretary of State Colin Powell discussed the idea of a Middle East conference with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Sunday, but no venue, participants or timing have been set, a senior State Department official said.

"The secretary talked to Sharon about the idea of a peace conference, noted that Sharon had proposed the idea and they talked about how it might be done as part of a way to move forward politically," the official added, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"But there's still more discussion necessary on both sides to see how we would do it, and where it would be set," he said.

Sharon said after the meeting with Powell that his proposal for a U.S.-hosted regional peace conference was acceptable to the United States.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told Reuters the idea was a "waste of time" that was no substitute for a peace plan backed by last month's Arab summit. "If Sharon wants to talk about peace, he can accept the Arab peace initiative or agree to end the occupation and withdraw to the June 4, 1967 lines," he said.

Arafat has already stuck his finger up thrice today at the US after the Powell Appeasement.

Good thinking Colin! Probably the only reason that we haven’t had lasting peace in the region is that the major principles in the region haven’t settled down for a good face to face.

Yes, Col, to a lesser intellect the sworn goal of the palis and the arab world of eradicating the planet of Jews would appear to be a road block in finding a diplomatic solution here. Way to think outside of the box, sir!
